Historical Description

LANGTOFT is a township, village and parish, which includes the township and chapelry of Cottam; it is seated in a valley on the road from Great Driffield to Scarborough, 6 miles north from Driffield station on the North Eastern railway and 12 west from Bridlington, in the Buckrose division of the Riding, wapentake of Dickering, Bainton Beacon petty sessional division, union and county court district of Driffield, rural deanery of Buckrose, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The church of St. Peter is a building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and a western tower containing 2 bells: the chancel retains trefoil-headed sedilia: the stained east window, erected in 1867, as a memorial to William and Hannah Lamplough, by their children, was removed in 1912 and replaced by a new window: several other stained windows have been added by Sir Tatton Sykes bart.: the church was thoroughly restored and partly rebuilt in 1903. by Sir Tatton Sykes bart. of Sledmere, at a cost of £8,000; the work included new nave, aisles, south porch, vestry and organ chamber; the chancel walls were strengthened and the tower repaired; the whole is now roofed with oak, and the fittings are of oak throughout: there is also a new stone font with richly carved canopy and a brass eagle lectern: there are 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1587. The living is a vicarage, with the perpetual curacy of Cottam annexed, net yearly value £352, including 330 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of York, and held since 1912 by the Rev. Joseph Hare. There are Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels. Peter de Langtoft, a monk and celebrated poet and historian of the 14th century, was a native of this parish and canon of the priory of Bridlington. The principal landowners are Henry Broadley Harrison-Broadley esq. M.P. of Welton House, the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, who are lords of the manor, and Sir Tatton Sykes bart. of Sledmere. The soil is mostly chalk; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips. The township contains 3,584 acres; rateable value, £2,854; the population in 1911 was 529 in the township and 621 in the parish.
