Historical Description

GREAT LANGTON is a township and parish, on the banks of the river Swale, 4 miles north-west from Ainderby station on the Northallerton and Hawes branch, and 4 south-west from Danby-Wiske railway station on the main line of the North Eastern railway and 6 northwest from Northallerton, in the Richomod division of the Riding, union and county court district of Northallerton, wapentake and petty sessional division of East Gilling, rural deanery of East Richomod, archdeaconry of Richomod and diocese of Ripon. The church (dedication unknown) is a small building of stone of the 12th century, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and a western turret containing one bell: the stained west window was presented by Mrs. Wilson, of the White House, as a memorial to Mr. F. Wilson, sometime churchwarden, and there is also a window inserted by Mrs. Fife Cookson in memory of the late Major W. W. Fife Cookson: the chancel has been panelled in oak, and a new pulpit provided: there are 150 sittings. The register dates from the year 1695. The living is a rectory, net yearly value 200, with 6 acres of glebe, and residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of York, and held since 1898 by the Rev. John Milner Walton M.A. of Pembroke College, Cambridge, and ad eundem, Durham. The mission chapel of the Good shepherd, licensed in 1877, will seat 90 persons. There is a Wesleyan chapel here. The trustees of the late Admiral the Hon. Walter Cecil Carpenter, of Kiplin Hall, Bolton-upon-Swale, are lords of the manor. The principal landowner is Capt. Alexander John Fife. The soil is clay and gravel; subsoil, stiff clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area of the township is 855 acres of land and 16 of water; rateable value, £865; the population of the township in 1911 was 110, and in the parish, 213.

Public Elementary school (mixed), endowed with £600 by the late Mrs. Redfern, for 83 children; average attendance, 65.
