Historical Description

The village of Lestingham, where was formerly a Benedictine monastery, founded by Cedde or Chad, bishop of the East Saxons or London, about the year 648. The church is very ancient and large, considering the obscure place in which it stands, and has probably belonged to or been part of the monastery.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

LASTINGHAM, or Lestingham, is a township, parish and village, 5 miles north-by-east from Kirby Moorside, 4 from Sinnington station on the Gilling and Pickering branch of the North Eastern railway, 7 north-west from Pickering and 15 north-north-west from Malton, in the Whitby division of the Riding, wapentake and petty sessional division of Ryedale, union of Pickering, county court district of Malton, rural deanery of Helmsley, archdeaconry of Cleveland and diocese of York. Since 1892 the village has been supplied with spring water; there is a storage reservoir holding 1,500 gallons, also a collecting tank connected therewith.

This place was the site of a monastery founded in 648 by St. Cedd, a Saxon bishop, and brother of St. Chad, bishop of Lichfield; St. Cedd was eventually buried in the stone church of St. Mary, erected some time after his decease, and the present church, if it does not incorporate portions of the early structure, at least occupies its site, and the very interesting crypt below the church confirms this view. The church consists of a Norman apsidal chancel, clerestoried nave of Early English date, c. 1190, aisles of three bays on the north, and four on the south side, south porch, and a Perpendicular embattled western tower containing 3 bells, and a clock with chimes placed 24 April, 1901, at a cost of £130: the chancel retains a piscina and credence table, and has five memorial windows of Italian glass; the former altar-piece, copy of Correggio’s “Christ in the Garden,” by John Jackson R.A. is now placed on the north side of the chancel: in the south aisle are memorial windows to Annie, daughter of the late Sydney Ringer esq. M.D. and to Thomas and Lydia Abbey, 1838; the west window is also stained, and there are others to Mrs. Sydney Ringer and Miss Florence Darley: the tower is Perpendicular: the crypt, which extends under the whole church, with, the exception of the western bay, is in fact an underground church, probably of Early Norman construction, c. 1078, and consists of apsidal chancel of two bays, and a nave and aisle of three bays, with a vaulted roof carried on massive piers and capitals enriched with interlaced arches and rude volutes; in the crypt are preserved some stone crosses carved with interlaced work; an altar, possibly Roman, 17 inches high by 14 inches wide, and a pre-Reformation bier: the windows, small and circular-headed, are deeply splayed; the church was repaired in 1835, from designs by Mr. Jackson, when the eastern apse was altered and much injured in order to display the altar-piece mentioned above; in 1879 it was completely restored under the direction of J. L. Pearson esq. R.A., F.S.A, architect, at a cost of £3,300, defrayed by the late Sydney Ringer esq. M.D., F.R.S, and the Ecclesiastical Commissioners: there are 245 sittings. The register dates from the year 1559. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £250, including 18 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of York, and held since 1905 by the Rev. Frank Henry Weston M.A. of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. The appropriate tithe amounts to £468, and belongs to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners and a lessee. There is a Wesleyan chapel in the village. Charities of £5 10s. yearly value are distributed to the poor, and a bequest of £15 yearly, left by John Stockton, is shared with other parishes for educational purposes. The reading room, originally the old National school, of which the vicar is the sole trustee, was opened in 1890, and has a small library of about 600 volumes. On a rising ground above the village stands a cross, erected on the occasion of the coronation of Her late Majesty Queen Victoria, June 28, 1838. John Jackson R.A. a distinguished portrait painter, was born here in 1773, and died in London, June 1, 1831. The trustees of the late Henry Darley esq. (d. 1904) are lords of the manor, The soil is peaty loam; subsoil, sandy clay. The chief crops are wheat and barley. The area of the township is 417 acres; rateable value, £903; the population of the township in 1911 was 135, and of the ecclesiastical parish, 554.

Public Elementary school, erected in 1885, in memory of Harriett Louisa Darley, for 80 children; average attendance, 26.
