Historical Description

LEAKE is a parish comprising the townships of Leake, Borrowby, Gueldable, Crosby, Landmoth-cum-Catto, Nether Silton and Knayton-with-Brawith, the first six mentioned being in Northallerton union and county court district, and the last in the union and county court district of Thirsk, in the Richomod division of the Riding, Allertonshire wapentake and petty sessional division (except Gueldable and Nether Silton), rural deanery of Thirsk, archdeaconry of Cleveland and diocese of York. Leake township is 6 miles north from Thirsk, and 5 ¼ south-east from Northallerton, and contains only one farmhouse. The church of St. Mary is an ancient building of stone in the Norman and Early English styles, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and a western tower containing a clock and 3 bells: the church was restored in 1908 at a cost of £700, the tower and chancel were restored in 1911 at a cost of £400, and affords 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1570. The living is a vicarage, with Nether Silton annexed, joint net yearly value £277, including 29 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Bishop of Ripon, and held since 1909 by the Rev. Daniel Reakes: the impropriate tithe amounts to £438. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners are lords of the manor and Captain Montagu William Warcop Peter Consett R.N. is the principal landowner. The soil is clay and gravel; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley and peas; there is some pasture land. The area of the township is 429 acres; rateable value, £379; the population in 1911 was 9, and in the ecclesiastical parish 861, which includes the formerly extra-parochial places of Cotcliffe and Bishop Ings.
