Historical Description

LEDSHAM is a parish, including the townships of Ledsham, Fairburn and Ledston and the hamlet of Newston, in the Eastern division of the Riding, upper division of the wapentake of Barkston Ash, Pontefract honor and county court district, union of Tadcaster, rural deanery of Pontefract and archdeaconry and diocese of York. Ledsham is situated 2 miles north of the river Aire and 1 west of the Great North road from London to Glasgow, 10 southeast from Leeds, 6 north from Pontefract and 2 from Micklefield station on the North Eastern railway. The church of All saints, an ancient building, dates from soon after the Norman Conquest and was probably founded by Ilbert De Lacy, and consists of chancel with a chapel on the north side, nave, north aisle, a tower with spire and pinnacles containing clock and 3 bells, and south porch: the church contains monuments to Lady Bolles, Sir John Lewis, and to the Lady Elizabeth Hastings, whose effigy, surmounting a sarcophagus, represents her in a recumbent position, reading a book of devotions, while on either side, placed on pedestals, are the figures of Lady Frances and Lady Ann Hastings, with emblems of Piety and Prudence; there are some stained windows in the church, which was fully restored in 1871. The register dates from the year 1539 and is in an excellent state of preservation. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £400 with residence and 52 acres of glebe, in the gift of Charles Wheler Wheler esq. J.P. and held by the Rev. James Timothy Bainbridge Landon M.A. of Magdalen College, Oxford, and prebendary of Holme in York Cathedral. There is a charity of about £200 yearly for the support of St. John’s Hospital for eleven aged men and women. In the neighbourhood are lime quarries. Charles Wheler Wheler esq. J.P. is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is very varied; subsoil principally limestone rock. The chief crops are wheat, barley and potatoes. The area of the township is 1,968 acres; rateable value, £2,313; the population in 1871 was 337; area of the parish 5,111 acres; population 931.

The Endowed school educates, on the foundation of Lady Elizabeth Hastings, twenty boys & as many orphan girls; children of the township of Ledston & parish of Ledsham, especially if orphans, having the preference, The school has recently (1881) been enlarged; Edward Edwards, master.

Orphan school, Miss Sophia Stubbs, mistress Newton is a hamlet, 1 ½ miles south-west on the river Aire. Here is a chapel for Primitive Methodists.
