Historical Description

LINTHWAITE is a township in the ancient parish of Almondbury and an ecclesiastical parish, formed in 1843, partly within the parliamentary borough of Huddersfield, 3 miles south-west from Huddersfield and 10 from Halifax, in the Southern division of the Riding, upper division of Agbrigg wapentake, Huddersfield union and county court district, rural deanery of Huddersfield, archdeaconry of Halifax and diocese of Ripon. There is a station at Golear on the North Western railway, one mile distant on the further side of the river Colne. The township is governed by a local board of health of 9 members. Christ Church, erected in 1827, is a Gothic stone building, consisting of nave with side galleries, and a tower with spire and 1 bell; at the east end is a stained window. The register dates from the year 1828. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £170, with residence, in the gift of the vicar of Almondbury and held by the Rev. Henry Edwards. There are reading rooms connected with the Conservative and Liberal Associations. There is a Wesleyan chapel, built of stone in 1867; the sum of £3,000 was given by George Mallinson esq. with sites for the minister’s residence and for the chapel; it has a fine-toned organ. The woollen manufacture is carried on here, and there are also extensive stone quarries. Sir Joseph P. P. Radcliffe bart. is lord of the manor and the principal landowner. The land is principally in pasture. The township contains 1,320 and the ecclesiastical parish 1,182 acres; rateable value, £15,777 10s.; the population in 1871 was, of the township 5,047; ecclesiastical parish 3,501.
