Thorpe Underwoods History

Thorpe Underwoods a large township, 2 miles south-east from Little Ouseburn; it is thinly peopled, consisting principally of a number of scattered farms. Sir Henry Meysey Meysey-Thompson bart. is lord of the manor and principal landowner. Thorpe Green Hall (at present unoccupied) is a square brick mansion with fine grounds and gardens, and is approached from the road by a carriage drive. The soil is loamy; subsoil, sand. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley and turnips. The area is 2,463 acres; rateable value, £3,312; population (1871), 151.
