Historical Description

LOCKTON is a township and chapelry, in the parish of Middleton, 2 miles south-east from Levisham station on the Pickering and Whitby branch of the North Eastern railway, 5 ½ north-east from Pickering and 13 north-northeast from Malton, in the Whitby division of the Riding, west division of Pickering Lythe wapentake, petty sessional division of Pickering Lythe West, union of Pickering, Malton county court district, rural deanery of Malton, archdeaconry of Cleveland and diocese of York. The church of St. Andrew is a small building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles containing 2 bells: there are 150 sittings. The register dates from the year 1757. The living is a vicarage, united to that of Middleton-with-Cropton, joint net yearly value £189, including 36 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of York, and held since 1902 by the Rev. Max William Blakeley, of St. Bees, who resides at Middleton. The rector of Levisham acts as curate here for the vicar of Middleton. There are Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels. A cemetery of 1 acre was formed in 1912, at a cost of £125, and is under the control of the Parish Council. The manorial rights are divided. William Cooper esq. of Aislaby Hall, is a landowner. The land belongs to several small owners, many of the farmers owning portions of their farms. The soil is limestone, redstone and peat; subsoil, the same. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats; the acreage is 7,169 acres; rateable value, £2,426; the population in 1911 was 315.

Public Elementary school, erected in 1879, for 70 children; average attendance, 60.

The Endowed Council school has been amalgamated with the Elementary school at Levisham.
