Historical Description

LONDESBOROUGH is a township, parish and village, with a station 1 ½ miles distant, in the parish of Shipton-Thorpe, on the York and Market Weighton branch of the North Eastern railway, and is 2 ½ north-north-west from Market Weighton, in the Howdenshire division of the Riding, Holme Beacon division of the wapentake of Harthill, Holme Beacon petty sessional division, Pocklington union and county court district, rural deanery of Weighton, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The church of All Saints is an ancient edifice in the Norman, Early English and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel with north aisle, nave, north aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower with crocketed pinnacles, containing 3 bells; the church underwent some alterations in 1679, probably by direction of Richard, Earl of Burlington, founder of the hospital, when the chancel walls and arch were rebuilt: in 1819 the lead covering the nave roof was sold and the proceeds used in lowering the roof, forming a plaster ceiling and erecting high pews and a gallery; the church was restored in 1885 at the cost of the Earl and Countess of Londesborough from plans by Mr. Temple Moore, architect, of London: over the south doorway is a Saxon cross and sundial: the chancel is separated from the nave by a fine screen of carved oak, designed by Mr. Temple Moore and executed by Mr. J. E. Elwell, of Beverley: under the east of the church is the vault of the Boyle family, Earls of Burlington, closed by a heavy slab with iron rings: beneath the east window of the north aisle are suspended some funeral banners of the Boyles and here is also an altar-tomb to Grissel, or Grisold (Hughes), wife, first of Edward, 5th baron Bergavenny and secondly of Sir Francis Clifford, kt. 4th Earl of Cumberland; she died 15 June, 1613; near it is a small marble tablet, with the figure of an infant in relief, to George Clifford, grandson of the foregoing: at the east end of the chancel, on the floor, is a brass to Lady Margaret (Bromflete), wife of John, Lord Clifford and Westmoreland, ob. 1483; it was placed by her son Henry, Lord Clifford and Westmoreland, known as the” Shepherd Lord,” from his having lived in concealment as a shepherd in this district and in Cumberland, until the accession of Henry VII. restored to him his titles and estates: the stained east window was erected in 1885 to commemorate the coming of age of William Francis Henry, Viscount Rain-cliffe, now (1913) Earl of Londesborough K.C.V.O. and there are memorial windows to William Henry Forester, 1st Earl of Londesborough, d. 19 April, 1900; and to Lady Lilian Katharine Selina (Ogle), his 2nd daughter, d. July, 1899: the organ was presented at a cost of £150, in memory of the 1st Earl; in 1904 new oak choir stalls were put in the chancel as a memorial to the Rev. Richard Wilton M.A. rector 1889-1903, and in 1907 an oak screen, originally in All Saints’, Driffield, was set up: there are 200 sittings. In the churchyard stands a finely-carved crucifix of stone, designed by Mr. Temple Moore, and erected as a memorial to the 1st Earl of Londesborough. The register dates from the year 1653. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £648, including 53 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Earl of Londesborough, and held since 1903 by the Rev. Richard Cecil Wilton B.A. of St. Catharine’s College, Cambridge, and chaplain to the Earl of Londesborough. Here is a hospital, founded in 1680 by Richard (Boyle), 2nd Earl of Cork and 1st Earl of Burlington and Lady Elisabeth (Clifford), his wife, for 12 poor persons and endowed with £100 yearly, charged on the Londesborough estate; the buildings consist of a long central block, with wings, and a doable roofed block of equal projection in the centre, and have highpitched roofs, sloped at the ends and relieved with dormers. A sum of about £3 yearly was left by Miss Knowlton to repair the family tombs, any surplus to be used for the distribution in bread to the poor. This place gives the title of baron and earl to the Denison family. Londesborough Park, which adjoins the village, it the property of the Earl of Londesborough K.C.V.O. but is now (1913) unoccupied; the mansion stands in a park of 400 acres, containing an avenue of trees upwards of a mile long and a succession of lakes and waterfalls, the largest lake covering 9 acres. The Earl of Londesborough K.C.V.O, is lord of the manor and sole landowner. The soil is chalk and clay; the subsoil is principally chalk. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley, turnips and seeds. The area of Londesborough and Easthorpe is 4,243 acres of land and 15 of water; rateable value, £3,727; the population in 1911 was 328.

Public Elementary School (mixed), erected in 1830, for 60 children; average attendance, 42.
