Historical Description

LONG MARSTON is a parish and village, 7 miles west from York, with railway station on North-Eastern branch from York to Harrogate, 3 miles from the village, which is 6 ½ east from Wetherby, 5 ¼ north-north-east from Tadcaster, in the Northern division of the Riding (but for parliamentary purposes in the North Riding), Ainsty wapentake, West Ainsty petty sessional division, union of Wetherby Tadcaster-county court district, Ainsty rural deanery, York archdeaconry and diocese; the parish includes the townships of Angram, Hutton Wandesley and Long Marston, and is situated on the York and Wetherby road, and the Knaresborough and York railway. The church of All Saints is a stone building, partly Norman and partly Early English, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle and tower, with clock and 3 bells, and was restored in 1869; it contains monuments to the families of Thwaites (1602), Thompson (1740), Roundell, Micklethwaite (1681) and smith (1820); the chancel is laid with encaustic tiles, and fitted with choir stalls, the organ being on the north side: the reredos is of carved freestone, representing the Lord’s supper: the stained east window was the gift of Edward Akroyd, of Bank Field, Halifax M.P. of the kith and kin of William Ackerode M.A. instituted rector of this church, June 13, 1477, whose will, dated September 12th. 1548, directs his body to be buried in the chancel, near the body of his mother: he also founded the Akerode exhibition, for the benefit of his kindred at either of the two universities, of which benefaction the aforesaid Edward Akroyd is at the present time one of the trustees; the first bell only bears a date with the inscription “Populum Voce 1728, Marmaduke Buck, rector, John Newby, John Shann, churchwardens”; the second has some disconnected letters, which are not legible; the third has inscribed on it. “Gloria in Excelsis Deo.” The register dates from 1648; there are earlier entries, but illegible. The living is a rectory, yearly value £960, with a good residence and 230 acres of glebe, in the gift of Lord Wenlock and held by the Ven. Frederick Watkins B.D. of Emmanuel College, Cambridge, archdeacon and canon of York and rural dean of the city of York. The Wesleyan Methodist chapel was erected in 1850. Andrew Montagu esq. is lord of the manor of Long Marston, and Edward Christopher York esq. is lord of the manor or Hatton Wandesley and Angram. The principal landowners are Andrew Montagu and Edward Christopher York J.P. esqrs. The soil is strong clay; the subsoil clay, sand and gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats, beans and seeds and turnips. The area of the township is 2,846 acres; rateable value, £3,750; of the parish, 4,595 acres; and the population in 1871 was, township 413, parish 560.
