The old church of St. Mark, a small plain building, with a turret containing 1 bell, built in 1749, has been replaced by a new church, erected at a cost of over £5,000, and consecrated in 1877: it is in the Gothic style, and consists of nave, aisles and north porch, with a bell turret containing the bell formerly in the old church and dated. 1749, with the initials “T. S.”; there are at present sittings for 500, but it is intended to add a chancel, which will increase the number of sittings to 550; the reading desk, of richly carved oak inlaid with satin wood, was presented to the church in 1836, from the parish church of Huddersfield, and is more than 150 years old; there is one stained window on the south side, in memory of George Herbert Sykes, erected in 1878; one of the central columns of the old church, a shaft about 7 feet in height, with a moulded capital, has been left standing in the churchyard as a memorial of the building of which it once formed a part; there is a Sun. dial on the south side of the church dated 1749, with the following inscription “Joseph Miller, fecit.
