Historical Description

LUNDS is a scattered hamlet in this township. The church is a small building of stone, consisting of chancel and nave; it was completely restored in 1894 at a cost of £92, and has 40 sittings. The register dates from the year 1749.

Public Elementary school, Hardrow, erected in 1875, for 95 children; average attendance, 49.

LUND is a parish, township and village on the road from Beverley to Driffield, 1 ½ miles south from Bainton station, on the Scarborough, Bridlington and West Riding railway and 7 north-west from Beverley, in the Buckrose division of the Riding, petty sessional division of Bainton Beacon, wapentake of Harthill, union and County court district of Beverley, rural deanery of Harthill, archdeaconry of the East Biding and diocese of York. The church of All Saints is a building of stone in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing 2 bells: there are several monuments, and a brass lectern and altar brass were furnished in 1891 by subscription: the church affords 250 sittings. A piece of ground was given in 1901 by Lord Hotham for the enlargement of the churchyard. The register dates from the year 1587. The living is a vicarage with that of Kilnwick annexed, joint net yearly value £340, including 211 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Rev. Canon Alexander Grimston M.A. vicar of Stillingfleet, and held since 1913 by the Rev. Arthur Michael Duncombe Du-Pre B.A. of Lincoln College, Oxford. There is a Wesleyan chapel, erected in 1835, and a Primitive Methodist chapel, with schoolroom attached, built in 1871, in place of an older one now used as a temperance hall. The ancient market cross, repaired in 1755, still remains. Lord Hotham, who is lord of the manor, and the Earl of Londesborough K.C.V.O. are the principal landowners. The soil is rich loam; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley and turnips. The acreage is 3,078; rateable value, £3,778; the population in 1911 was 408.
