The church of St. Oswald is a plain building of stone, originally in the Early English style, but was much modernized under faculties in 1742, 1788 and 1818; it consists of chancel, nave, south porch and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing 2 bells: the stained east window is a memorial to the Rev. William Long, upwards of 45 years curate and vicar of this parish (1813—58): in the church are monumental inscriptions to the Hon. Maria Henrietta Sophia Phipps, d. Dec. 4, 1808; Hon. Augusta Maria Phipps, d. March 20, 1813; Henry, 1st Earl of Mulgrave, d. April 7, 1831, and Martha Sophia (Maling), his wife, d. March 17, 1849; and to Gen. the Hon. Edmund Phipps, his son, 27 years M.P. for Scarborough, who died sept. 15, 1837: in 1881 an organ was erected; the carved oak eagle lectern was set up in 1886: there are 400 sittings: in 1887 the churchyard was enlarged by 1 ½ acres, given by the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, and a lych gate erected to the Linton family. The register dates from the year 1634. Lythe Hall, built in 1661, is the present vicarage. The living is a discharged vicarage, net yearly value £276, with residence and 2 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Archbishop of York, and held since 1901 by the Rev. William George Harland L.th, of Durham University. The tithe and churchlands, amounting to £562, are appropriated to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners. Here is a Wesleyan Methodist chapel, rebuilt in 1882, and seating 170. Mulgrave Castle, the seat of the Rev. the Marquess of Normanby M.A., D.L., J.P. was built about the year 1735, by Catharine, wife of John (Sheffield), Duke of Buckingham, and is a noble mansion of stone with a lofty tower and graceful turret, and a fine interior: it is situated close to the village, and commands extensive and delightful views of the surrounding country and the North sea: the shrubberies, pleasure gardens and walks are tastefully laid out, and the park, which contains 200 acres, is well-wooded and stocked with deer: situated on a ridge between two ravines, in the midst of the adjoining woods, are the ruins of the ancient castle, a fortress dating originally from the Norman period and then of very considerable strength: the existing portions were chiefly the work of William de Percy, about 1150, and the Fossards; subsequently the castle became the property of the de Mauleys, by whom it was enlarged: on an eminence at the eastern extremity of the woods, where two becks unite, is a picturesque little structure called the “Hermitage”: tickets of permission to visit the woods and ruins on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays, may be obtained from Messrs. Buchannan and sons, solicitors, Baxtergate, Whitby, and of the station master, Sandsend. The Rev. the Marquess of Normanby is lord of the manor and principal landowner.
