Historical Description

MALTBY, situated on the road from Rotherham to Bawtry, is a parish, comprising the townships of Hooton Levett and Maltby, 6 miles east from Rotherham, 4 west from Tickhill and 12 east-north-east from Sheffield, in the Southern division of the Riding, Rotherham union and county court district, south division of Strafforth and Tickhill wapentake, rural deanery of Rotherham, archdeaconry and diocese of York. The church of St. Bartholomew is a plain stone structure, rebuilt, with the exception of the tower, in 1859, on the site of the old edifice, and consists of chancel, nave, aisles and tower containing 3 bells and surmounted by a spire; there are several stained windows, one of which is a memorial erected by Fretwell William Hoyle esq. of Rotherham, in March, 1861; another in the south side was erected by Mrs. Crossby and Miss Frith. in memory of Peter Frith. of Sheffield, and his wife. The register dates from the year 1678, and is in good condition. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £180 with residence, in the gift of the Earl of Scarbrough and held by the Rev. Robert Maners Norman B.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. There is a chapel for Wesleyans. The poor’s estate of 8a. 1r. 35p. produces £28 yearly. In the village is an ancient stone cross, and near it are the ruins of the once magnificent Abbey of Roche, or de Rupe, founded by Richard de Buili and Richard Fitz Turgis or de Wikerslal, A.D. 1147, for monks of the Cistercian order, and dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary: a natural phenomenon, probably heightened by art, contributed to induce the monks to make choice of this rocky Talley, where, among the accidental forms which portions of the fractured limestone had assumed, was one bearing some resemblance of Our saviour on the Cross, a figure held in great reverence during the whole period of the existence of the abbey: at the Dissolution in 1539, when Henry Cundal, the 28th and last abbot, with seventeen monks, surrendered the abbey, its yearly revenues were valued according to Dugdale, at £271 19s. 4d. gross revenue, the clear income being £224 2s. 5d.; the site was granted in 28th Hen. VIII. (1546—7) to William Ramesden and Thomas Vavasor: the ruins of this once extensive and splendid abbey, situated in a deep and narrow vale, have been so wasted'by time that nothing now remains except an entrance gateway, some fragments of the transepts of the church, with the pillars on which the great towers rested, the base of the west end of the nave and a few other detached masses of the wall, the architecture of which is probably of the time of Edward II. or III.; the abbey gateway, at a short distance north-west of the church, seems of later date, its arches, low and obtuse, suggesting a date not much earlier than the reign of Henry VII.: the abbey is supposed to have been nearly on the plan of that at Kirkstall and was built of white freestone: stately trees now rise amid the ruins, and in the valley stands the abbey mill by an ancient lake. Sandbeck Hall, 2 ½ miles south-east from the village, the seat of the Earl of Scarbrough, lord of the manor and principal landowner, is a spacious stone building, erected about the middle of the last century, situated in a finely-timbered park of 350 acres, surrounded by extensive woods and well stocked with deer. A private chapel has been erected at Sandbeck Hall by the Earl; the services of which are conducted by the Rev. William Travis Travis M.A. of Clare College, Cambridge, private chaplain to the Earl of Scarbrough. The rail is chiefly limestone, some parts clay and loam; the subsoil limestone. The chief crops are wheat, barley and turnip with some pasture. The area of the parish is 4,645 acres; population in 1871, 805; area of the township 4,096 acres; rateable value, £5,389 6s.; population in 1871, 718.

School (mixed), endowed with 14 acred of land, John Holgate, master; infantas' school, Mrs. Harriet Holgate, mistress. There are also two Sunday schools.
