Historical Description
MANFIELD is a parish, township and village, rear the river Tees, and half a mile from the Great North road from Catterick Bridge to Piercebridge, 2 miles south-south-east from Piercebridge station on the Barnard Castle and south Durham branch of the North Eastern railway, 5 west-south-west from Darlington and 8 north-north-east from Richmond, in the Richmond division of the Riding, wapentake and petty sessional division of Gilling East, union and county court district of Darlington, rural deanery of East Richmond, archdeaconry of Richmond and diocese of Ripon. The church of All Saints is an ancient building of stone, in the Early English style, with Pointed arches, and consists of chancel, clerestoried nave, aisles, porch and a massive tower containing a clock and 3 bells: the pulpit and font are both of white stone, beautifully carved: the east and west windows are stained and there are several others, chiefly memorials, and including one to the Rev. John Swire M.A. vicar from 1823: the reredos is of carved oak: the organ was erected in 1891, at a cost of £300, raised by subscription, as a memorial to the Rev. C. B. Yeoman M.A. vicar (1860—89): the church was restored about 1855 and re-seated with oak, at a cost of above £1,100, and affords 280 sittings. A lych-gate was erected in 1901 as a memorial to Richard Bassett Wilson, 2nd Lieut. Yorks Hussars and Lieut. Imperial Yeomanry, who died from wounds received in action, July 21, 1900, at Oliphant’s Nek, in the Transvaal. An inscribed slab has since been placed within the lych-gates to John Gerald Wilson C.B. Col. 3rd York and Lancaster Regt. who died from wounds received in action March 8th, 1902, at Klipsdrift, in the Transvaal. The register dates from the year 1600. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £242, including 7 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Ripon, and held since 1889 by the Rev. Vincent John Ryan M.A. of Wadham College, Oxford, rural dean of Richmond East, and surrogate. The charities, amounting to £14 yearly, are derived from land in Melsonby. Two memorial cottages were erected in 1903 by the family of the late Col. J. G. Wilson C.B. for the use of disabled soldiers and sailors of the Imperial forces, as a memorial to Col. John Gerald Wilson C.B.; Col. Richard Bassett Wilson C.M.G. and Lieut. Richard Bassett Wilson, who lost their lives in the south African War, 1899—1902. Murrough John Wilson esq. J.P. of Cliffe Hall, who is lord of the manor, and John Timothy D'Arcy Hutton esq. of Aldburgh Hall, Masham, are the principal landowners. The soil is a strong clay, and the subsoil sandy and gravelly. The chief crops are wheat, oats, turnips and potatoes. The area of the township is 2,873 acres of land and 47 of water; rateable value, £3,028; the population in 1911, of the parish, 332, and of the township, 273.
