Historical Description

MAPPLETON is a parish comprising the hamlets of Mappleton, Rowlston and Great Cowden, and part of the township of Great Hatfield, in the Holderness division of the Riding, North division of the wapentake of Holderness, North Holderness petty sessional division, union of Skirlaugh, county court district of Beverley, rural deanery of Hornsea, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. Mappleton hamlet is 2 ½ miles south-by-east from Hornsea Bridge station, and 3 north-east from Sigglesthorne station, both on the Hull and Hornsea branch of the North Eastern railway, and 15 ½ east-by-north from Beverley. The church of All Saints is an edifice of cobblestone, faced with stone, in the Early English and Decorated styles, and consists of chancel, nave, north aisle, south porch, vestry and a western tower with spire, containing one bell: two of the stained windows were presented by the Rev. Christopher Forge, and include the east window, a memorial to his three children, who are interred beneath, and there are others to Thomas and Jane Duke, of Hornsea, and Hannah, their daughter, Maxwell and Ann Cressey, and to E. T. Dawson and Rebecca, his wife: the ancient font bears the arms of the St. Quintin and FitzHugh families: in the north aisle is a tomb of white marble erected over the vault of the Brough family: the church was restored in 1855-56, at a cost of £1,500, and in 1888 heating apparatus was added at a cost of £108: there are 220 sittings. In 1786, the church was 28 chains 76 links distant from the sea cliff, and in 1858, 21 chains 62 tinks; in June, 1871, the sea had encroached to within 19 chains 50 links, and it is still approaching. The register dates from the year 1778. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £195, including 5 ½ acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Archdeacon of the East Riding of York, and held since 1911 by the Rev. David Hepburn Brown M.A. of Exeter College, Oxford. The tithe, amounting to £444, belongs to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners. There is a Wesleyan chapel, erected in 1890, with 120 sittings. Charities:-Robert Brown, of Great Cowden, left by will, dated May 5th, 1790, £100; William Ake, of Mappleton, £100, the interest to be expended in the purchase of two shillings’ worth of bread, distributed after Divine service amongst the poor who attend church, the remainder to be given to the poor at Christmas; Miss Duke left £200, the interest of which is also given to the poor in coals at Christmas. Mrs. Haworth-Booth is lady of the manor. The principal landowners are Mrs. Haworth-Booth, and Benjamin Booth Haworth-Booth esq. D.L., J.P. of Rolston Hall. The soil is clayey and marly; subsoil, clay and marl. The chief crops are wheat, oats and beans. The area of Mappleton and Rowlston is 1,901 acres of land, 2 of water and 105 of foreshore; rateable value, £2,473; the population in 1911 was 147 in the township and 326 in the parish.

Public Elementary School, erected in 1871, at a cost of £700, & will hold 90 children (20 on the roll); average attendance, 19.
