Rowlston History
ROWLSTON is a hamlet, 1 mile north-west from Mappleton and 1 ½ south-by-east from Hornsea Bridge station. Rolston Hall, the seat of Benjamin Booth Haworth-Booth esq. B.A., D.L., J.P. is an ancient mansion, where is preserved the cannon ball which the notorious sea-rover, Paul Jones, fired at this house on one of his cruises off the coast; a stone in an adjoining field marks the spot where the ball fell; William Brough esq. Marshal of the High Court of Admiralty, was then residing here. This estate was held at the time of the Conquest by the Le Brus family, and has since passed through several families by marriage, to the present owners; in the dining room is a finely carved oak fireplace, bearing the arms of eight families who have successively held this property.
