Historical Description

Market-Weighton is a small market-town, eighteen miles from York, consists principally of one long street. About forty years ago the houses were in general low and mean, and covered with thatch; but since that period a number of elegant buildings have been erected, by spirited individuals, on the sites of the old ones, so that the town has an air of neatness and convenience united. The chief inn (the new King’s Arms), built by the late Duke of Devonshire, is a spacious, elegant, and, it may with justice be added, a magnificent structure.

Market Weighton stands on a little river called Foulness; and here is a communication between the Humber and a place within two miles of Weighton, by means of a canal. Coals and other articles are brought to this place for the supply of the town and neighbourhood; and the keels or barges which bring them return laden with grain.

The situation of this town is uncommonly pleasant and healthful, and so level is the country about it, that from a hill near the town of very inconsiderable elevation, the three minsters of York, Lincoln, and Beverley, and about a score of parish churches, may on a clear day be distinctly seen. Roman and British antiquities are frequently discovered in the neighbourhood of this town.

The church is an ancient, strong, but heavy structure. It formerly had a wooden spire, which has been taken down, and a considerable addition made to the height of the tower. Of late years the inside of this church has been greatly ornamented, and furnished with an additional gallery, and a number of commodious pews.

The market is held on Wednesdays after it is dark. This is a great corn market, where some thousands of quarters are weekly disposed of by sample.

The principal villages and seats of the nobility and gentry in the neighbourhood are as follows: Lonesborough, the seat of the Duke of Devonshire, two miles distant. In the parish church at this place are hung up some pieces of very ancient armour: such as a helmet, steel coverings for the hands, &c. There are also several escutcheons and monuments of very ancient date. Goodmanham, a village of great antiquity, one mile distant. —South Dalton, six miles distant, and Houghton, only two miles from Weighton.

Not far from Weighton is Holme monastery, which, after the Dissolution, became the seat of a branch of the Constable family, afterwards of the loyal Sir Marmaduke Langdale, from which he had the title of Baron conferred on him during the exile of Charles II. being the first English peer created by that prince, which title expired with his descendant and the fifth lord in 1778, who died without issue male.

The Roman road from York to Weighton, runs across the Derwent, over Kexby Bridge, leaving the Benedictine nunnery at Wilberfoss to the left. Thence it passes on to Barnby Moor, near an inn. Over the moor the Roman road is very visible, and may be traced most part of the way on the present road. This led over Stanford Bridge to the north-east of Barnby Moor and Pocklington, through Millington, through Lonesborough Park, Weighton, &c. to Brough.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

MARKET WEIGHTON is a market town, township (of Market Weighton and Arras) and parish, on the high road from York to Hull, with a junction station of the York, Market Weighton and Beverley; Selby and Market Weighton and Market Weighton and Driffield branches of the North Eastern railway, 11 miles west from Beverley, 20 south-east from York, 20 north-west from Hull and 190 from London, in the Howdenshire division of the Riding, Holme Beacon division of Harthill wapentake, Holme Beacon petty sessional division, Pocklington union and comity court district, rural deanery of Weighton, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The town is lighted with gas by a company formed in 1871, and supplied with water by a company formed in 1885, the water being pumped into a reservoir on the Springwells hills about 1 ¼ miles from the town. A canal, 10 miles in length, formerly connected this town with the Humber, but the upper part is being allowed to silt up. The church of All Saints, originally founded at a period anterior to the Conquest, is a building of stone, consisting of chancel with aisle, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower of Transition-Norman date, containing a clock and a fine peal of 6 bells: there is a carved oak reredos: in 1891 a memorial window was erected to Matthew and Alfred Jackson, surgeons, of this place: in 1895 a stained window was presented by Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Dunhill, of this town, and there are others, including one to the Rev. R. D. French M.A. vicar here 1880-99; the new stonework for this window was designed by Mr. Temple Moore, architect, of London, and the total cost was £500: in the church is a tablet to William Bradley, d. May 30, 1820, who was 7 feet g inches in height, and weighed 27 stone: the church was restored in 1871, and has attached to it an estate, the income arising from which is devoted to the repair of the fabric, and the maintenance of public worship: there are 500 sittings. The register dates from the year 1653. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £225, including 71 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of York, and held since 1910 by the Rev. Arthur Alfred Robert Gill M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. There is a Catholic chapel, erected in 1905, and dedicated to Our Lady of Succour, which is served from Houghton. The Wesleyan chapel, erected at a cost of £2,000, and opened in October, 1868, is an edifice of brick, seating 400 persons: the old chapel, built in 1786, is used for a Sunday school. The Congregational chapel, erected in 1809, and rebuilt in 1882, on an enlarged site, will seat 200 persons. Here is also a Primitive Methodist chapel, seating 250. A cemetery of 3 acres was formed in 1883, and is under the control of the Parish Council, consisting of 13 members. The Fire Brigade is also under the control of the Parish Council. The Police Station, with court house attached, was erected in 1903. The Market Weighton Agricultural Society holds a meeting here annually. Fairs are held on the 14th May and September 25th, for cattle and sheep; the latter is an important one for sheep and is well supplied. A market for corn, eggs and butter is held here every Wednesday in the Market place, and for cattle, sheep and pigs on alternate Tuesdays. The several charities together amount to about £93 yearly, which sum is given in money and bread to the poor of the parish. Baroness-Herries (Duchess of Norfolk), Edward Michael Fawcett esq. of Lumby Hall, South Milford, and the Earl of Londesborough K.C.V.O. who is lord of the manor, are the principal landowners; manorial courts are held annually in November. The soil is sand and clay; subsoil, chalk and gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips. The area of Market Weighton and Arras township is 5,872 acres of land and 10 of water; rateable value in 1908, £10,677; the population in 1911 was 1,770.
