Historical Description
MARRICK is a civil parish and village, pleasantly situated on the river Swale, 7 miles west from Richmond station and 2 ½ east from Reeth, in the Richmond division of the Riding, wapentake and petty sessional division of Gilling West, union of Reeth, county court district of Richmond, rural deanery of Richmond West, archdeaconry of Richmond and diocese of Ripon. The church of St. Andrew, situated near the north bank of the river Swale, and about a mile from the village of Marrick, is a plain but ancient edifice of stone, occupying part of the site of the priory, and consists of chancel, nave and a tower containing 3 bells: in the church is an ancient tomb, with Latin inscription in old English characters, referring to Isabella, one of the nuns of the priory, and sister to Thomas Pudsey, of Barforth: on the chancel floor are the arms of Boger Aske, founder of the nunnery of Marrick: there are about 350 sittings. The register dates from the year 1687. The living is a vicarage, annexed to Grinton, net joint yearly value £270, including 40 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Bishop of Ripon, and held since 1907 by the Rev. Bertrand Gregory L.th, of Durham University, who resides at Grinton. There is also a chapel of ease in the village in connection with the parish church, and seating about 100 persons. The Wesleyan chapel, rebuilt in 1878, seats 150 persons. The charities amount to £5 18s. 8d. yearly, besides the Duke of Bolton’s charity of £8 11s. 6d. yearly for the benefit of three poor widows. Here was anciently a Benedictine nunnery, founded by Boger Aske, in the reign of Stephen, and dedicated to SS. Andrew and Mary; at the Dissolution there were 16 nuns and revenues estimated at £48; the ruins, situated near the present church, consist chiefly of the remains of the priory church, around which are a few ancient tombstones. The house called “Marrick Abbey” is now the property of the Rev. Edward John Cumming Whittington-Ince M.A. rector of Wormington, Glos. and is occupied as a farm by Mr. Robert Bainbridge. Marrick Park is an ancient stone mansion, 1 mile east from the village, and stands on the site of the old hall, built by Paulet Paulet esq.; it is now the: property of Edward Francis Riddell-Blount esq. of Cheeseburn Grange, Newcastle-on-Tyne, who is lord of the manor and principal land owner. The soil is light; subsoil, stone and gravel. The land is principally pasture. The parish, including the small hamlets of Hurst, Shaw, Oxque, Owlands and Ellers, contains 6,177 acres of land and 29 of water; of the land area 202 acres are woodland; the ether portion is principally arable, meadow and pasture land; rateable value, £3,729; the population in 1911 was 161.
A school Committee, consisting of 6 managers, was formed 1 July, 1903, for the united district of Marrick & New Forest; William Anthony Waggett, clerk Public Elementary school, erected in 1878, at a cost of £700, for 40 children; average attendance, 12.
