Historical Description

MARSKE is a civil parish and village, bounded on the east by the river Swale, 5 miles west from Richmond station and 5 east from Reeth, in the Richmond division of the Riding, wapentake and petty sessional division of Gilling West, union and county court district of Richmond, rural deanery of West Richmond, archdeaconry of Richmond and diocese of Ripon. The church of St. Edmund is an ancient building of stone, principally in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, porch and an open belfry containing one bell: in 1900 a memorial window was placed to the Rev. T. W. Robson B.A. rector here 1867—80, and his wife there are 180 sittings. The register dates from the year 1597. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £260, including 30 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of John Timothy D’Afoy Hutton esq. and held since 1879 by the Rev. Thomas Agmondisham Vesey, of Trinity College, Dublin. There is a small Wesleyan Chapel art Clints, At Ellerton, hear this place and in Downholme parish, are the ruins of a Gilbertine priory for nuns following the Rule of St. Benedict, and Marrick priory, also for Benedictine nuns. Marske Hall, the property of John Timothy D’Arcy Hutton esq. J.P. of Aldburgh Hall, Masham, and now the residence of Frank. Stobart esq. J.P. is a mansion of stone in the Classic style, near to the village: in the grounds is an obelisk 60 feet high, which covers the remains of Captain Matthew Hutton, who died in 1813. This family of Hutton have furnished id the church two archbishops, viz. Matthew Hutton, Archbishop of York 1595, who died 16 Jan. 1605—6; and another Matthew Hutton, who held the same see from 1747 to 1757, and was Archbishop of Canterbury from 1757 to his death, 19 March, 1758: there are portraits of both at the hall. J. T. D’Arcy Hutton esq. is lord of the manor and sole landowner. The soil is clayey, and the subsoil clay, with a little limestone. The land is principally pasture. The area is 6,724 acres of land and 35 of water; rateable value, £3,903; the population in 1911 was 199.

Public Elementary (Endowed) school, erected in 1841 by Mr. Hutton, for 40 children; average attendance, 35; Fred G. B. Beck, master: the endowment consists of £20 a year from “Hutton’s Charity” & £30 from “Jackson’s Charity”.
