Historical Description

MARSKE-BY-THE-SEA is a civil parish and village, with a station on the Saltburn branch of the North Eastern railway, 12 miles south-east from Middlesbrough, 6 north from Guisborough, 3 south-east from Redcar and 2 west from Saltburn-by-the-sea, in the Cleveland division of the Riding, union of Guisborough, petty sessional division of Langbaurgh East, county court district and rural deanery of Middlesbrough, archdeaconry of Cleveland and diocese of York. The parish is governed by the Guisborough Rural District Council, and the village is lighted with gas by the Redcar, Coatham, Marske and Saltburn Gas Co. St. Mark’s church, erected in 1867, at a cost of £7,000, principally defrayed by Thomas, 2nd Earl of Zetland K.T., is an edifice in the Norman-French style, consisting of chance], nave, aisles, south porch and a south-eastern tower containing a clock and 6 bells, presented by the late Joseph Pease esq. M.P.: at the west end is a memorial window and inscribed brass to Thomas, 2nd Earl of Zetland K.T. d. 6 May, 1873, and in the chapel is a memorial window to Sophia Jane, Countess of Zetland, his wife, who died 21 May, 1865, and there are others in the north aisle to the Venerable Archdeacon Yeoman, Robert Yeoman esq. and the Rev. F. Grant James, a former vicar. The Norman font is from the ancient parish church of St. Germain. A 13th century wayside cross, dug up in 1901, stands at the west end of the church. There are 700 sittings. The old church of St. Germain stands on the brink of the cliff to the east of the village, but is now only used as a mortuary chapel. The register dates from the year 1575. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £200, including 12 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Marquess of Zetland K.T., P.C. and held since 1909 by the Rev. Edmund Hope M.A. of Keble College, Oxford. The tithe amounting to £135, is impropriated. There is a Wesleyan chapel, built in 1860, and a Primitive Methodist chapel, erected in 1866. Here is a miners’ hospital for six inmates, partly supported by Messrs. Pease and Partners and public subscriptions and the Marquess of Zetland K.T., P.C. The Literary Institute, established in 1862, comprises a library of 700 volumes, reading, billiard and smoking rooms, and a large hall for concerts, and is supported by voluntary contributions. The Guisborough Joint Hospital Boards’ sanatorium for small Pox, at New Marske, was built in 1898, at a cost of £750, for 12 patients. Marske Hall, the seat of the Marquess of Zetland K.T., P.C., D.L., J.P. is an ancient mansion in the Domestic style of the early 17th century: the principal front is generally of two storeys, with a plain but high parapet; in the centre is a projecting square tower of three stages, the base of which forms the entrance: similar but larger towers flank the facade, and all three have four-sided domical roofs: between the towers are wide oriel windows rising through the entire height. The Marquees of Zetland is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil of the parish is strong loamy; subsoil, clayey and stone. The chief crops are wheat, barley and beans. The area of the parish is 3,402 acres of land and 252 of foreshore; rateable value, £21,875; the population in 1911 was 2,955.

Under the provisions of the “Local Government Act, 1894,” Saltburn-on-sea civil parish was formed from Marske-by-the-sea.
