Historical Description
MARTON is a parish and an ancient village, on an eminence, near the Yarm and Redcar road, 1 mile west from the Ormesby station on the Middlesbrough and Gruisbro’ branch of the North Eastern railway, 6 miles north from Stokesley, 6 east-south-east from Stockton and 4 south from Middlesbrough, in the Cleveland division of the Riding, west division of Langbaurgh liberty, petty sessional division of Langbaurgh North, union and county court district of Middlesbrough, rural deanery of Middlesbrough, archdeaconry of Cleveland and diocese of York. Under the provisions of the “Local Government Act. 1894” (56 and 57 Vict. c. 73), the portion of Marton civil parish within the Middlesbrough municipal borough now forms part of that newly-constituted civil parish. The church of St. Cuthbert is an ancient cruciform building of stone, restored about 1846, and consists of chancel, nave, transepts, south and west porches and a western turret containing 2 bells: the chancel is Early English but retains a fine Norman arch: the rest of the church is also Norman: the east window, and many of the others are stained: a memorial brass has been erected by the parishioners to the late Sir Raylton Dixon kt. (d. 1901), and there are 280 sittings, the register dates from the year 1572. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £230, with 5 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of York, and held since 1905 by the Rev. Algernon James Holloway M.A. of Christ Church, Oxford, who is also chaplain of Cleveland Asylum. There is a Wesleyan chapel, and a parish reading room containing a library of about 300 volumes. The charities, of about £20 yearly value, are derived from lands in Broughton. Marton Hall, destroyed by fire in 1833 and rebuilt during the period 1854—75, is a large mansion of red brick, commanding a most delightful prospect, and the property and residence of Carl Ferdinand Henry Bolckow esq. D.L., J.P. who is lord of the manor of Marton. Capt. Cook, the entry of whose baptism appears in the parish register, was born in this village 27th Oct. 1728, in a cottage long since demolished; it was situated in the grounds of Marton Hall, the spot now being marked by a granite vase. Tolesby Hall, the seat of Eleazer Biggins Emerson esq. B.A., J.P. is a manor house, erected in 1810, near the site of an old Elizabethan mansion, and is surrounded by trees. John James Emerson esq. of Easby Hall, C. F. H. Bolckow esq. J.P., J. Mills esq. and Arthur John Dorman esq. of Grey Towers, Nunthorpe, are the principal landowners. The soil is strong clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, beans and oats. The area of the parish, inclusive of the hamlet of Tolesby, is 3,116 acres of land and 5 of water; rateable value, £12,909; the population in 1901 was 819, and in 1911, 1,239, inclusive of 83 officers &c. and 409 patients of Middlesbrough Borough Lunatic Asylum.
The Middlesbrough County Borough Asylum, known as the Cleveland Asylum, in this parish, was erected in 1898, at a cost of £98,000, for 260 beds & enlarged in 1904 for 430 patients & 89 officials & employees at a cost of £26,000. In the grounds is an isolation hospital for 10 patients. There is a detached chapel in the Early English style, with 250 sittings. The Asylum is controlled by a visiting committee of the Middlesbrough Borough Council. John Wm. Geddes M.B., C.M.Edin, medical superintendent; Henry Geo. Drake-Brockman M.R.C.S.Eng., L.R.C.P.Lond, assistant medical officer; Rev. Algernon James Holloway M.A. chaplain; Mrs. Woodhouse, matron; E. C. Rudman, clerk & Steward Public Elementary school (boys & girls), erected as a memorial to Capt. Cook; in the school is a tablet with the following inscription:-“To the memory of Captain James Cook, the celebrated circumnavigator, who was born in this parish, October 27th, 1728. This tablet was erected by the parishioners of Marton A.D. 1812; re-erected here at the building of this memorial school A.D. 1850.” Captain Cook was educated at Aytou, & on the summit of a hill at Easby, near Stokesley, is a monument to him; the school will hold 110 children; average attendance, 55.
