Historical Description

MARTON-IN-CRAVEN, situated on the Clitheroe road, is a parish consisting of the villages of East and West Marton and the hamlet of Marton scar, 2 miles from Elslack station on the Midland railway, 10 from settle, 5 ¾ south-west from Skipton and 215 from London, in the Northern division of the Riding, eastern division of Stainclirffe and Ewcross wapentake, Skipton union, petty sessional division and county court district, Craven archdeaconry, rural deanery of West Craven, and diocese of Ripon. The Leeds and Liverpool canal passes through. The church of St. Peter is an old stone building, consisting of chancel, nave, south aisle and square tower with 3 bells; it was partly restored and re-pewed in 1852 by Richard H. Roundell esq. and was since completed by the late Rev. D. R. Roundell M.A. The register dates from the year 1560. The living is a rectory, worth about £250 yearly with residence, in the gift of William Roundell esq. and held by the Rev. William Henry Hamilton M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. Gledstone, the seat of William Roundell esq. is a handsome stone mansion, pleasantly situated in a park of 152 acres.

Marton House, the seat of Theophilus Hastings Ingham esq. J.P. is a good stone building, situated on the Skipton and Clitheroe road; it commands an extensive view of the valley of Pendle and Weets hill. William Roundell esq. is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The subsoil is stone. The land is exclusively used for grazing. The area is 2,805 acres; rateable value, £3,477 3s.; and the population in 1871 was 237.

Day school (mixed), is endowed with £1,109 8s. 9d. in £3 per Cent. Consols: a school house was built in 1855 at the sole expense of the late Rev. D. R. Roundell M.A.
