Historical Description

Masham, about seven miles south-east from Middleham, has a handsome church, and a fine spire. It is a small manufacturing town.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

MASHAM is a small market town, township and parish, near the junction of the river Burn with the Ure (or Yore), both of which flow through the parish; it is the terminus of the Masham and Ripon branch of the North Eastern railway, 6 miles south-west-by-south from Bedale, 10 north-west from Ripon, 10 south-south-east from Middleham, 12 south-south-east from Leyburn and 17 south from Richmond, in the Richmond division of the Riding, wapentake and petty sessional division of Hang East, Bedale union, county court district of Ripon and in the rural deanery, archdeaconry and diocese of Ripon. The parish consists of the townships of Masham, Ellington (High and Low), Swinton-with-Warthermarske and Burton-upon-Ure, for ecclesiastical purposes, and of the entire eight townships of Masham, Swinton-with-Warthermarske, Ilton-cum-Pott, Healey-with-Sutton, Fearby, Ellingstring, Ellington (High and Low) and Burton-upon-Ure for parochial purposes. The “Local Government Act of 1858” was adopted here Feb. 6, 1863, but the parish is now under the provisions of the “Local Government Act, 1894” (56 and 57 c. 73) governed by an Urban District Council. The town is lighted with gas. In 1896 waterworks were constructed on the Agra Plantation at a cost of about £3,000, with a land rental of £10 per annum: the reservoir registers 30,000 gallons in 24 hours. The church of St. Mary is a fine structure, originally Norman, but rebuilt in the 14th century, and consists of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and a western tower, with octagonal lantern and lofty spire, restored in 1855, at a cost of nearly £300, and containing 8 bells and a clock: the organ was given by the late William Danby esq. who also granted an annual rent-charge of £30 per year on lands situated at Warthermarske, as a perpetual endowment for the organist: the reredos of marble and alabaster was presented in 1882 by Lady Lavinia Bickersteth in memory of her aunt, Mrs. Danby Harcourt, of Swinton Park, and displays within arched panels, decorated and crocketed, representations of the Crucifixion, the Annunciation and the Nativity: the stained east window was presented by Admiral Harcourt, and there are memorial windows to Charlotte Marian, wife of John Fisher esq. and to William Burrill esq.; there are several marble monuments to the Danby and Harcourt families, and in the north aisle is a splendid monument of alabaster, with reclining effigies of Sir Marmaduke Wyvill bart. ob. 1616, and Magdalen, his wife, daughter of Sir Christopher Danby kt. of Thorpe, and a brass with acrostic inscription to Christopher Kay, ob. 23 Oct. 1689, and Jane Nicollson, his grandmother, ob. 4 June, 1690: over the chancel arch is part of a picture of the Nativity said to be by Sir Joshua Reynolds: the church was thoroughly restored during the period 1860—67, a cost of £4,000, and in 1882 the chancel was renovated; the interior is fitted with oak and will seat 500 persons. The registers, dating from 1542, are in good condition, and there is a record of a court of churchwardens having been held on the 10th day of August, 1541—2. The living is a vicarage, united with Kirkby Malzeard, joint net yearly value about £324, including 13 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Trinity College, Cambridge, and held since 1912 by the Rev. Charles Henry Watson M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. There is a Catholic church, erected in 1910; in pre-Reformation days the Catholic parish of Masham was considered as one of the richest in England, and had the distinction of having eminent bishops and cardinals as its parish priests, till its revenues were sequestered by Henry VIII. and given as endowment to Trinity College, Cambridge. There is a Baptist chapel, erected in 1815, and seating 200 persons, also Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels. The town is chiefly supported by agriculture: here are two breweries. An artesian well, sunk in 1876 on Mr. T. Lightfoot’s brewery, to a depth of 435 feet, yields a constant supply of excellent water; the cores taken from this boring were presented by Mr. Lightfoot to the Yorkshire Philosophical society, and may be seen in their museum in York. In the centre of the market place is an ancient cross. The market day is on Wednesday. Fairs are held on the 17th and 18th of September for sheep, horned cattle and pedlars’ ware. The Mechanics’ Institute was erected in November, 1856, as a memorial to the Rev. Thomas Riddell M.A. a former vicar; it comprises a residence for a librarian, and has a library of 2,400 volumes. The Town Hall, erected in 1913, at a cost of about £4,000, is a plain stone building; on the ground floor are council offices and a large hill, and on the first floor are ante-rooms, in 1853 the late Mrs. Danby Harcourt, of Swinton Park, erected six almshouses in Park street, and invested the sum of £2,650 in the £2 ¾ per Cent. Consols, in trust for the support of six aged men or women, each inmate to be the recipient of 5s. per week; and in 1858 Admiral Harcourt erected four other almshouses, investing the sum of £1,775 in the £2 ¾ per Cent. Consols, in trust for four aged men or women, each inmate to receive 5s. per week. About 3 miles south-east of Masham is Hackfall, which consists of a series of walks along the richly-wooded banks of the river Ure; the river, which is close to the town, affords good fishing This place, in 1712, gave the title of baron to Sir Samuel Masham bart. created Baron Masham of Otes, co. Essex, but the title became extinct on the death of Samuel, 2nd baron, in 1776; it was, however, revived in 1891 in favour of Samuel Cunliffe-Lister esq. first Baron Masham; the second baron is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is light mould and gravel; subsoil, gravelly The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats, turnips and potatoes. The area of the parish is 17,028 acres, of which there are 9,270 acres of open moors and fells, extending from 3 to 6 miles west from the town.
