Swinton-with-Warthermarske History
SWINTON-WITH-WARTHERMARSKE is a township, 1 mile south-west from Masham, on the south bank of the river Burn. Swinton Park is the seat of Lord Masham J.P.; the mansion is of local stone in the castellated style, with a massive entrance and a tower on the east side: the park consists of 300 acres on the south side of the river Burn, well stocked with deer, and the scenery it affords is exceedingly beautiful. Lord Masham is lord of the manor and sole landowner. The soil is gravelly, and the subsoil is sandstone. The crops are oats and barley and there is some land in pasture. The area is 1,831 acres of land and 26 of water; rateable value, £1,969; the population in 1911 was 205.
