Historical Description
MELBECKS is a civil parish on the north bank of the river Swale, and was formed into an ecclesiastical parish in 1841 from the civil parish of Grinton; it is in the Richmond division of the Riding, wapentake and petty sessional division of Gilling West, Reeth union and Richmond county court district, rural deanery of Richmond West, and archdeaconry and diocese of Ripon, and contains the following villages and hamlets:-Feetham, in which the church is situated, is 3 miles west of Reeth; Gunnerside 3 west from Melbecks church, Low Row half a mile south-west, Barf End 2 ¼ west, Blades a quarter of a mile north-west, Kearton 1 east, Lodge Green 3 west, Dyke Heads 3 ¼ west, Winterings Garth 3 west, and Smarber a mile west. Feetham is 13 ½ miles west from Richmond, on the river Swale. There is no village of Melbecks. The hamlets of Whita side, Crackpot and Summer Lodge, in the parish of Grinton, are included in Melbecks for ecclesiastical purposes; the names will be found under Grinton. The church of the Holy Trinity, erected in 1841, is a plain building of stone, consisting of chancel, nave, and a tower containing 2 bells: the interior was restored in 1886 and affords 300 sittings. The registar dates from the year 1841. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £201, with residence, repaired in 1900, at a cost of about £150, in the gift of the vicar of Grinton, and held since 1912 by the Rev. John Hutchinson Walton M.A. of Durham University, who resides at Crackpot; of the tithe £31 is assigned to the vicar of Grinton and £9 to impropriators. There is a Congregation chapel at LOW ROW seating 300 persons; this chapel was founded in 1690 by Philip, Lord Wharton, who conveyed it in trust to be used as a place of worship by Nonconformists: it was subsequently licensed under the “Five Mile Act,” but a new chape] was built in 1809. Lord Wharton on his death, Feb. 4th, 1696, conveyed by deed to trustees certain property, the income from which was to be devoted to the free distribution of Bibles and other books. The Wesleyan Methodist chapel, rebuilt in 1901, will seat 300 persons. Captain F. H. Lyell is lord of the manor, and Simon Birkbeck esq. of Shap, Westmorland, is the principal landowner; there are several smaller owners.
The land is chiefly moorland in pasture. Soil light; subsoil, gravel and stone. The area of the township is 7,934 acres of land and 52 of water; rateable value, £4,426; the population of the civil parish in 1911 was 411, and of the ecclesiastical parish, 626.
The Literary Institute, erected in 1877, has a large assembly room, reading and recreation rooms and a library of over 500 volumes.
