Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

MELSONBY (anciently “Melshamby,” “Molesby” and “Moxby’’) is a civil parish and village, 5 miles south from Piercebridge station on the Barnard Castle and south Durham branch of the North Eastern railway, 8 south-west from Darlington and 5 north from Richmond, in the Richmond division of the Riding, wapentake and petty sessional division of West Gilling, union and county court district of Richmond, rural deanery of East Richmond, archdeaconry of Richmond and diocese of Ripon. The parish includes a portion of the township of East Layton, and adjoins the great road from. Catterick Bridge to Piercebridge. The church of St. James the Great is an edifice in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, with clerestory, aisles, south porch, rebuilt by the Rev. J. Barmby, a former rector, in 1850, and an embattled western tower containing a clock, given by Mrs. Woods, of Benton Hall, Northumberland, and 4 bells, one of which was the gift of the rector, and the others of Mrs. Mackworth-Dolben, of Finedon, Northants. The stained east window was presented by the Rev. Henry Ellison M.A. rector 1852—1907: there are eight other stained windows, all memorials, and including one to the Rev. William Smith, rector, d. 1731, the gift of Mrs. Sillery; and another to the Rev. James Barmby, rector, d. 1852, the gift of his son, the Rev. James Barmby; the church has been restored and reseated, and affords 250 sittings. The register dates from the year 1573. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £530, including 96 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of University College, Oxford, and held since 1909 by the Rev. John Vincent Bullard M.A. of that College. There is a Wesleyan chapel here, erected in 1866. A nunnery was founded here, before 1167, as a cell to Marton, and dedicated to SS. Mary and John the Evangelist, but is supposed to have been destroyed previous to the Reformation; the ruins, which are small, stand near the front of the rectory. The Duke of Northumberland and the Marquess of Zetland K.T., P.C. are the chief landowners. The soil varies both in kind and quality, and is principally upon limestone. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips. The parish (independent of that portion of East Layton which is in this parish) contains 2,742 acres; rateable value, £3,026; in 1911 the population of the civil parish was 547, and of the ecclesiastical parish, 587.
