Historical Description

MELTHAM is a township and ecclesiastical parish and pleasant village and terminus of a branch of the Lancashire and Yorkshire railway situated in an open valley at the foot of a mountainous moorland ridge, in the parish of Almondbury, Southern division of the Riding, upper division of Agbrigg wapentake, Huddersfield union, county court district and rural deanery, Craven archdeaconry, Ripon diocese, 5 miles south-west from Huddersfield, 3 ¾ north-west from Holmfirth and 7 south-west from Almondbury. The township is governed by a Local Board of Health of 12 members. The church of St. Bartholomew, a plain stone edifice, was erected in 1651, and consecrated by Henry Tilson, Bishop of Elpliin; in 1786 it was rebuilt, and in 1835 was enlarged and improved by the addition of a square tower containing 6 bells to the previously existing nave: in 1877 the church was restored and re-seated throughout, the body of the church with pitch pine and the chancel with oak; the addition of the chancel, which is in the Norman style, and the restoration generally, was effected by public subscription, at a cost of about £3,600, to which Edward Brook esq. was a munificent contributor, who also gave the set of chimes, which play 14 tunes; the foot was presented in 1878 by the Misses Brook, and is in the Norman style, being to some extent a copy of the font in the parish church of Ancaster, a model of which was in the Exhibition of 1851; there is a pulpit of carved oak, presented by an anonymous donor, and a handsome brass lectern, presented, in 1878, in memory of Lewis Lloyd Jones, by his sister; the church contains several monuments to the Brook family, the Armytages of Thickhollins, and one to the Rev. Joseph Hughes, a former vicar of the parish, who died in 1863: the sittings in the galleries and the body of the church are all free: the organ was presented by the late Joseph Hirst esq. of Wilshaw, and was restored in 1877 at a cost of £250. The erection of a church in the time of the Commonwealth. when Episcopacy was proscribed, is a remarkable fact; the see of York was vacant and Bishop Tilson was then serving the cure of Cumberworth. The register dates from the year 1669 and is in a good state of preservation. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £350 with residence, in the gift of the vicar of Almondbury and held by the Rev. Edward Collis Watson, of St. Aidans. The Wesleyan Methodists and the Baptists have each a chapel here. Charles Brook left in 1870 £540 £3 per Cent. Consols, the interest for the poor. Fairs are held on the first Saturday in April and the first Saturday after the 11th of October. Meltham has a Mechanics’ institute and Conservative and Liberal clubs. Here are several woollen mills, a large cotton mill and dye works. Coal is found and excellent building and flag stones. A great part of the township is moorland. The land is in pasture. The soil is loamy; subsoil stone. There are joint lords of the manor. The principal landowners are Mrs. Green-Armytage, H. F. Beaumont esq. J.P. Edward Hirst esq. Jonathan Moorhouse Lockwood esq. and Charles Lockwood esq. The area of the township is 4,692 and of the ecclesiastical parish 4,800 acres; rateable value, £15,349; the population in 1871 of the township was 4,229, of the ecclesiastical parish about 3,000.
