Historical Description

METHLEY is a parish and pleasant and well-built village, with three railway stations, one on the Midland, one on the Lancashire and Yorkshire and the other on the Great Northern railways; it is situated on the Pontefract and Leeds turnpike road, on the river Calder, at the entrance to the Aire and Calder canal, 6 miles north-west from Pontefract, 7 ½ south-east from Leeds, 198 ¼ from London, in the Southern division of the Riding, honor of Pontefract, lower division of Agbrigg wapentake, Pontefract County court district and union, rural deanery of Wakefield, archdeaconry of Craven and diocese of Ripon. The church of St. Oswald is a stone building inf the Later English and Decorated styles, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle and a tower with spire, containing 3 bells, dating from 1813: some stained windows and several ancient monuments of exquisite workmanship, in good preservation, of the Savile and Waterton families; over the south door is a statue of King Oswald, the patron saint: there is also one of the first Earl of Mexborough in his robes: in a chapel at the end of the south aisle is a high alabaster tomb, with effigies of Lionel, Lord Welles K.G. Lieutenant of Ireland (ob. 1461) and his wife. The registers date from 1560, and are in good condition. The living is a rectory, yearly value £900 with residence, including 370 acres of glebe, allotted at the enclosure in lieu of tithes, in the gift of the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and held by the Rev. the Hon. Philip Yorke Savile M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. Here are chapels for Wesleyans and Primitive Methodists. There are nine almshouses for poor women of this parish, supported by the Earl of Mexborough and the parish; they receive 3s. per week from the latter and 4s. per month from the Earl of Mexborough. There are coal mines in this parish, worked by Messrs. Henry Briggs, son and Co. Limited and William Wood esq.: here are also several maltings. Methley Hall, a stately stone mansion in the Tudor style, situated in an ancient well-wooded deer-park, formerly a royal domain, is the seat of the Earl of Mexborough, who is lord of the manor and owns most of the land, except the glebe. The soil is loam, clay and sandy; subsoil, various; the crops are wheat, oats, barley, potatoes and green crops generally. The population in 1871 was 3,277; area, 3,492 acres; rateable value, £19,368.
