Historical Description

MEXBOROUGH is a market town, railway station and extensive parish on the river Don, 8 miles west from Doncaster, 11 south-east from Barnsley, 6 north-east from Rotherham, 11 from Sheffield and 164 ¼ from London, in the Southern division of the Riding, south division of Strafforth and Tickhill wapentake, in the union and county court district of Doncaster, rural deanery of Wath-upon-Dearne, archdeaconry and diocese of York. The River Dun Company and the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway Company have a canal and railway running through the parish, which is also in connection with the Midland, Swinton and Knottingley, and Sheffield and Doncaster railways. The town is governed by a Local Board of Health of 12 members. The church of St. John the Baptist is an ancient stone structure in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, south aisle and tower, with spire and 3 bells, lately recast, and contains monuments bearing the arms of the Savile family, an ancient font, and an organ. The register dates from the year 1562. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £400, in the gift of the Archdeacon of York and held by the Rev. Henry Ellershaw M.A. Durham; Henry Robert Markham Clifton, esq. of York is the present lessee, under the Archdeacon of York, of the appropriate rectory, yearly value £700. There is a chapel at Denaby, erected by John Fullerton esq. and licensed by the Bishop for Divine service; Rev. John Myddelton Evans M.A. Exeter College, Oxford, curate in charge, who also serves the mission chapel at Denaby colliery. There are chapels for Wesleyans, Wesleyan Reformers, Primitive Methodists and Congregationalists, and a United Methodist Free Church. Here are six almshouses for poor widows, endowed in 1669 by Messrs. Horne and Calverly; each inmate receives a few shillings at Christmas. The views obtained on a clear day from the common, which has been enclosed, are exceedingly interesting. Mexborough is a rapidly rising place, and has increased from 500 inhabitants in 1800 to 4,316 in 1871, a complete change having been effected in the character as well as appearance of the town. A School Board was formed March 30, 1875. There is a Water Works Company, incorporated May 31, 1877. The Cemetery was opened in 1878 under the control of a Burial Board of 9 members: it comprises about four acres and has two mortuary chapels. Here are extensive ironworks for the manufacture of railway wheels and axles; a celebrated pottery, where the manufacture of earthenware is carried on to a considerable extent; the Don Glass Works, employing a great number of hands, and a large sanitary pipe manufactory belonging to Mr. Simpson of Conisbrough. There are several stone quarries which supply Sheffield with grinding-stones: brewing and boat-building are also carried on, and the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway factory employs a great number of hands. In the parish are some fine beds of coal. The market-day in Saturday, a market hall has been erected at a cost of about £4,000; and there is an annual feast or pleasure fair on 23rd June. The parish consists of two manors and lordships, viz. the manor of Mexborough, belonging to Andrew F. W. Montagu esq. and the manor of Denaby, belonging to Thos. Grey Fullerton esq. of Thriberg Park; these two manors are separated by the navigable river Don. Andrew F. W. Montagu esq. of Melton Hall, and the Earl of Mexborough, are chief landowners. The soil is sandy and clayey-it is rich and productive; the subsoil is gravel, grindstone and coal. The chief crops are wheat, barley, beans and turnips. The population of Mexborough in 1861 was 2,462 and in 1871 4,316, and of Denaby 695: the area of Mexborough is 1,293 acres; rateable value, £20,034 3s. 4d.; area of Denaby 1,058 acres; rateable value, £9,337 5s. 9d.; the area of the entire parish is 2,367 acres; population in 1871, 5,011.
