Historical Description
Middleham, a small town, formerly supported by its market, but this has very much declined of late. An open square, forming a large market-place, is the principal part of the town. It is situated on the side of a hill, above which appears its most striking feature, the remains of its once-magnificent castle.
MIDDLEHAM is a township and parish, on the high road from Ripon to Hawes, on the south side of the river Ure, over which is an iron bridge connecting the town with Leyburn, 2 miles south-south-east from Leyburn station on the Northallerton and Hawes branch of the North Eastern railway and 10 west from Bedale and 10 south from Richomod, in the Richomod division of the Riding, wapentake and petty sessional division of West Hang, union and county court district of Ley-bum, rural deanery of Catterick West, archdeaconry of Richmond and diocese of Ripon The town is lighted with, gas from works established in 1857, and there is also an installation of electric light. The church of SS. Mary and Alkelda, formerly collegiate, is an ancient building of stone in the Early English and Decorated styles, standing on the summit of a gentle eminence, overlooking a beautiful and verdant valley: it consists, of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing a clock with chimes, given by Mr. John Topham in 1880, and 8 bells; the 6 original bells, erected by John Breare in 1826, were recast and rehung in 1911, and two new bells were added, at a total cost of £570: in 1853 three stained windows were placed in the chancel the stained east window is a memorial to Christopher Topham, and there are others to the children of Thomas Topham, Charles Marsh Lamb esq. and family, the Revs. Miles Galloway Booty and J. A. Birch, former rectors, and the Rev. John Cockcroft, a former curate; there are also some fragments of ancient glass; and on the south side of the chancel is a brass to the Rev. Christopher Colby M.A. d. 9 July, 1827, and on one of the columns of the nave is an inscribed brass, recording the supposed discovery here of the relics of St. Alkelda: on the wall of the baptistery is the tomb slab of Robert Thornton, abbot of Jervaulx Abbey, from which it was brought; it bears a mitre and pastoral staff and the rebus of the abbot: the ancient 15th century font cover of oak, a structure 10 feet in height, and arranged in three stages, has been restored, and still retains its original colouring; the choir stalls, with canopies richly carved, were provided at a cost of about £350: the church was restored and re-seated with new benches in 1876—8, at a cost of £3,343, and in 1901 the chancel was widened and panelled in oak, canopied oak sedilia and a low oaken screen erected, and the walls decorated in gold and colour: in 1903 a new oak pulpit was erected to the memory of the brothers Swale, formerly churchwardens: an oak Teredos was placed in the chancel as a memorial to Martha Birch, and in 1908 a new organ was provided at a cost of £520: there are 400 sittings: this church ceased to be collegiate in 1856, when the deanery created by Richard III. was abolished, but the canonries remain, though they have not lately been filled, The register dates from the year 1604. The living is a rectory, average net yearly value £270, including 67 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Ripon, and held since 1903 by the Rev. Harry Gillespie Topham B.A. of Jesus College, Cambridge, rural dean of Catterick West, and surrogate. By an Order in Council, sept. 8, 1857, all the lands, tithes &c. formerly belonging to the deanery of this church were vested in commissioners for the use of the benefice. The Wesleyan chapel was erected in 1824, and there is also a Primitive Methodist chapel. A Reading Room was established in 1862. The town is of little importance as a place of trade, but it is celebrated for its training grounds, many famous race-horses having been reared and trained here; it has also become a favourite resort for tourists. A fair is held on the 5th and 6th of November for horses, cattle and sheep, and is one of the greatest fairs in the North of England; it is held on the moor, about half a mile from the town. Charities of £20 11s. yearly value, being the rent of 4a. 1r. 21p. are given away every Easter and Christmas in money. The neighbourhood is studded with gentlemen’s residences. The greatest object of interest in the town is the now ruined, but once magnificent, castle, originally built in 1190 by Robert Fitz-Ranulph, but the outer ward was entirely remodelled by the Nevills, who inherited it through the marriage of Robert Nevill, 54 Hen. III. 1269—70, with Mary, eldest daughter and coheir of Ralph Fitz-Ranulph: in the reign of Henry VI. it belonged to Richard Nevill, Earl of Warwick K.G better known as “the king maker,” after he had been taken prisoner at Wolvey, but he subsequently escaped while hunting in the park: after the battle of Barnet, April 14th, 1471, in which this earl was killed, the castle was granted to Richard, Duke of Gloucester, afterwards Richard III. who frequently resided here, and here his son, Edward, Prince of Wales, was born in 1474; it is now the property of Lord Masham: the castle stands to the south of the town, and the entrance is on the north side of the ruins, through a strong arched gateway; in plan the fortress was rectangular, and consisted of a keep within a fortified inclosure, 240 feet long from north to south and 190 from east to west, and surrounded by a curtain wall 30 feet in height, defended at intervals by various towers, and with a fore-building or barbican on the eastern face; beyond was a slight ditch, of which some traces remain on the south side, but there are no indications of any moat or drawbridge on the north side, next the town: the keep of rubble, with ashlar dressings, measures about 100 feet from north to south and 80 from east to west, and is about 55 feet in height, with walls 9 feet thick and wide protecting buttresses at the angles, formerly rising into turrets; the interior is divided into a basement, first or state floor and on the east side an upper floor, these being reached by a well-stair, 12 feet in diameter, constructed in the south-east angle, and rising to the battlements; the first floor contains, on the east side, the hall, a lofty apartment of Late Norman date, with a curious vaulted mural chamber, 12 by 9 feet, cummunicating at the northeast angle; on the west side of this floor are a number of other rooms; the barbican tower, 33 by 48 feet, is built against the south-east angle of the keep, and covers two-thirds of its height, consisting within of a basement and first floor, both vaulted, and on the second floor a vestibule and Early English chapel, also vaulted: the approach from the outside was by a flight of stone steps built against the wall, about 9 feet wide and 50 in extreme length to the entrance of the vestibule: the castle gatehouse, at the north-east angle of the curtain wall, is a work of the Decorated period, built of fine ashlar, 50 feet wide and 25 feet deep, with a vaulted entrance, flanked by buttresses, and retaining a groove for a portcullis: the keep has been partially cleared of rubbish, and a stone wall and palisading have been erected to protect the ruins: about 500 yards south of the castle is a high mound, called “William’s Hill,” mostly artificial, and probably raised for military purposes. There is a bull ring in the village, and a few yards away are the remains of an ancient cross. Lord Masham, of Swinton Park, is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The land is chiefly in pasture; subsoil, limestone. The area is 2,111 acres of land and 44 of water; rateable value, £4,647; in 1911 the population was 680.
