Historical Description
MIDDLESMOOR, situate near the Nidd, is an ecclesiastical parish and village, on the summit of a hill, comprising Under Stonebeck township and parts of Stonebeck Up and parts of Stonebeck Down and Fountains Earth. and formed from the parish of Kirkby Malzeard, 9 miles northwest from Pateley Bridge, 10 from Masham and 17 from Ripon, in the Eastern division of the Riding, Claro wapentake, Pateley Bridge union, Ripon county court district, rural deanery of Masham, archdeaconry of Richmond, and diocese of Ripon. The church of St. Chad, originally erected in 1484, and restored in 1866, is a building in the Gothic style of the fourteenth century, or second Pointed, consisting of chancel, nave and north aisle, with square tower, and a peal of 6 bells, dating from 1868: there is a very fine old Saxon font, and in the churchyard a cross. Eugene Aram, immortalised by the fiction of the first Lord Lytton, was baptized here in 1704 and married in 1728. The register dates from the year 1700, and is in fair condition. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £150 with house, in the gift of the vicar of Masham-cum-Kirkby Malzeard and held by the Rev. George Grainger Cass B.A. of Wadham College, Oxford. The Wesleyans have a chapel here. A fair is held on the 14th of September yearly, for lambs and cattle. There are in this locality many subterranean passages worthy of inspection. The Nidd, entering one of these at Goydon Pot, after passing 2 miles underground, emerges under Middlesmoor Vicarage. How Stean, a spot well known to tourists, through which Steanbeck flows, is in this district; the caverns here stretch for a long distance underground, and it is doubtful whether they have ever been completely explored. John Yorke esq. J.P. is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are Mrs. Oxley, Thomas Carter esq. C, Other esq. William Harker esq. and George Metcalfe esq. The soil is clayey; the subsoil is clay and rock. The chief crops are oats and pasture. The area is 19,944 acres; the population in 1871 was 551.
