Historical Description

MIDDLETON is a township, village and ecclesiastical parish, formed in 1849 from the parish of Rothwell, 3 ½ miles south from Leeds, 6 north from Wakefield, 188 from London, in the Southern division of the Riding, wapentake of Agbrigg, union of Hunslet, county court district of Leeds, deanery of Wakefield, archdeaconry of Craven and diocese of Ripon. The church of St. Mary the Virgin is a stone building, erected in 1846, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, north transept, tower and spire and has an organ and stained windows. The register dates from the year 1846. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £140, in the gift of the vicar of Rothwell and held by the Rev. Augustus Jameson Miller M.A. of Exeter College, Oxford. Here is a chapel for Wesleyan Methodists. The inhabitants of this village are mostly engaged in mining, pits having been worked here for about 300 years. Edmund Maude, F. W. Tetley, John Rhodes, George Marsh and Marshall Nicholson esqrs. are lords of the manor and the principal landowners. Middleton Lodge, the seat of Edmund Maude esq. Stands in the centre of Middleton wood. The soil is gravelly; subsoil, mineral with coal. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips. The area of the township is 1,815 acres; rateable value, £9,221 12s. 6d.: population in 1871, 1,058.
