Historical Description

MIDDLETON TYAS is a parish, township and village, on the great Roman road from Catterick Bridge, across the river Swale, to Piercebridge, where it crosses the Tees to the county of Durham, 3 miles north-west from Scorton station on the Richmond branch of the North Eastern railway, 5 north-east from Richmond and 7 ½ from Darlington; it is in the Richmond division of the Riding, wapentake and petty sessional division of East Gilling, union and county court district of Richmond, rural deanery of East Richmond, archdeaconry of Richmond and diocese of Ripon. The church of St. Michael is an ancient building of stone, with a Norman arcade on the north side and one of Early English date on the south; it consists of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower with spire, containing 3 bells: the chancel screen is a memorial to Florence (Trelawny), wife of Sir J. E. Backhouse bart. d. 1902: in the chancel is a brass mural tablet to Leonard Hartley esq. d. Dec. 1883; and another to the Rev. Dr. John Mawer, a former vicar, who died in 1763, and is said to have been able to write and speak 22 different languages; in the chancel is also a memorial window to a son of Sir Jonathan E. Backhouse bart. and in the south aisle one to Mrs. Eyre, widow of General Eyre, and formerly lady of the manor, and another to the Hon. Mrs. Eva Lucy Eyre, widow of the late Lieut.-Col. Henry Robert Eyre, she died 8 Feb. 1895; there are also memorial windows to Miss Eyre and Edward Backhouse esq.: the church was restored about 1868, at an expense of upwards of £4,000, by Leonard Hartley esq. under the superintendence of the late Sir George Gilbert Scott R.A. at which time the spire was added: the whole of the chancel floor was laid with marble at the cost of Miss Eyre: there are 220 sittings. The register dates from the year 1539. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £481, including 120 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Ripon, and held since 1899 by the Rev. Ernest Ayscough Stockdale B.A. of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. The impropriate tithe amounts to £43. There is a Wesleyan chapel. The charities are of £10 annual value. Middleton Lodge, the property of Ralph Vincent Eyre esq. and the residence of Arthur Francis Pease esq. is a modern stone mansion, standing in a park of about 2 miles in circumference, 1 mile from the village: East Hall, also the property of R. V. Eyre esq. in the residence of John Francis Baker-Baker esq. and Morris Grange, of Norman Field esq. J.P. R. V. Eyre esq. who is lord of the manor, and Sir Jonathan Edmund Backhouse tart of Darlington, are the principal landowners. The soil is clayey; the subsoil, clay upon limestone. The chief crops are wheat, oats, beans, barley and turnips and some land in pasture. The area of the township of Middleton Tyas with Kneeton, is 3,203 acres; rateable value, £4,102; the population of the township in 1911 was 463, and of the parish, 695.

Public Elementary school (mixed), erected in 1863, for 150 children; average attendance, 72.

In 1895 an Infants’ school was erected by the late Lieut.-Col. Eyre, for 60 children; average attendance about 15.
