Historical Description
MIRFIELD, a portion of which stands on high ground, and commands extensive views, is an extensive parish, on the great read leading from Dewsbury to Huddersfield and Manchester, between 2 and 3 miles west from Dewsbury and about 5 north-east from Huddersfield, 12 south-west from Leeds, 9 west from Wakefield and 198 ½ from London, and is a polling place for the Southern division of the Riding, in the lower division of the wapentake of Agbrigg, union and county court district of Dewsbury, rural deanery of Dewsbury, archdeaconry of Craven and diocese of Ripon, situated on the river Calder, with a station on the Lancashire and Yorkshire end North Western railways. The parish is governed by a Local Board of 12 members. According to an old monkish manuscript, the ancient church of St. Mary the Virgin in Mirfield, was erected, or rather rebuilt, in the year 1262 (for it is mentioned in 1066), and was consecrated to be a chapel of ease to Dewsbury; it did not, however, long remain appendant to Dewsbury, for shortly after its consecration, the Pope, at the request of Sir John Heton, made Mirfield a distinct parish the only portion now remaining is the lower part of the old tower, the wall of which consists of rubble stones firmly embedded in a strong cement, without much regard to regular courses; whilst the small semi-circular-headed windows, and the low arched door leading from the bottom of the tower to the nave, show it to be of a very early date: around the chancel was formerly the following inscription in Old English:—
“+ Dame Joan Kepast, late Nun of Kirklees, was buried ye Fift day of February M.D.LXI.+”
On a gravestone in the chancel was the following inscription: —
”Here lieth the body of Christopher Shaw, Lieutenant to Sir Ingram Hopton, who was buried April 3rd, Anno Dom. 1644.”
The tower formerly contained 6 bells, dated respectively:-Treble, 1725; 2nd, 1725‘; 3rd, 1786; 4th. 1778; 5th. 1775; tenor, 1852: these, on the erection of the new church, were given to Thornhill church, and a new peal of 10 bells placed in tower of the new church. The present church of St. Mary, situated on an eminence, was erected by subscription, under the superintendence of the late Sir G. G. Scott R.A. in 1871, and is a well-designed edifice of stone in the Gothic style of the 13th century, and consists of chancel, nave and a tower with four lofty pinnacles, rising to a height of 139 feet, and containing a clock and a fine peal of 10 bells, the respective weights of which are as follows:—6 cwt. 1 qr.; 7 cwt. 6 lbs.; 7 cwt. 3 qrs. 18 lbs.; 8 cwt. 1 qr; 2 lbs.; 11 cwt. 16 lbs.; 14 cwt. 1 qr.; 16 cwt. 1 qr. 6 lbs.; 20 cwt. 2 qrs. 10 lbs.; and 30 cwt. 1 qr. 22 lbs.: the diameter of the tenor bell is 4 feet 7 inches, ad the thickness of metal 3 7/8 inches; the nave is 82 feet long, 27 feet wide, and 64 feet in height from the floor line to the apex of the roof, and is divided into five bays; the aisles are 13 feet 6 inches in width; and the chancel 40 feet by 27 feet, including the choir and sanctuary: there are two vestries placed at the north-east end, and the church is heated on an approved principle: the ancient font and the monuments are now in the old tower, a new font having been presented by the Rev. Ralph Maude, late vicar of Mirfield. The register dates from the year 1559, and is in excellent condition. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £242 with residence, in the gift of E. T. Ingham esq. of Blake Hall, and held by the Rev. John Priestley Foster M.A. of Corpus Christi college, Cambridge. There are Methodist New Connexion, Primitive Methodist, Congregational, Moravian and Baptist chapels. Up to the year 1231 Mirfield formed a part of the parish of Dewsbury and the cause of its separation, as appears from a Latin MS. in Hopkinson’s Collection of Documents, id singular-“It happened,” says the ancient story, “that as the lady of Sir John Heton, the Baroness of Mirfield, was going to mass before dawn on Christmas Day to the parish church of Dewsbury, a distance of 3 miles, she was waylaid and robbed and her principal attendant murdered, at a place called Raffensthorpen layne; on the same day, while she was at dinner, at nine o’clock in the morning (that being then the fashionable hour), two mendicant ecclesiastics came to crave her charity, telling her at the same time that they were going to Rome, where her husband, Sir John, was then residing; on this intimation she feat down and wrote a letter to her husband, narrating the horrid scene, and begged of him to make interest with the Pope to alter the chapel of Mirfield into a parochial church, that the inhabitants might no longer be exposed to the dangers she had encountered on the way to the parish church: this letter she confided to the priests, who duly delivered it to the knight, whose suit was so successful that his Holiness elevated Mirfield into a rectory and bestowed the patronage of the church upon Sir John Heton and his posterity.” Richard Thorpe, in 1667, conveyed to trustees certain houses and lands for teaching gratuitously 15 poor children; this income, with £20 a year left by Joseph Ledgard and Thomas Holdsworth. now produces an income of nearly £200 a year; it is applied to the education of 10 children free and 10 at half fee, under a scheme of the Endowed school Commissioners of 1869, under which scheme schools and a master’s house have been erected a a cost of over £2,000. R. Beaumont’s charity of £14 12s. 6d. yearly is for apprenticing; also £333 6s. 8d. £3 per Cent. Gas works were established in 1856.
