Historical Description

GREAT MITTON (or Mytton) is a township, small village and with the adjoining small township of Bashall Eaves, forms an ecclesiastical parish, in the Clitheroe union, county court district and petty sessional division, in the Northern division of the Riding, western division of the Ewcross and Staincliffe wapentake, rural deanery of West Craven, Craven archdeaconry and diocese of Ripon, 2 miles south-east from Whalley, 3 north-west from Clitheroe and 20 south-west from settle, situate on the north of the river Ribble, which separates it from Lancashire. The church of Allhallows is a Gothic stone building, standing on the precipitous bank of the Ribble, whence may be obtained beautiful views of the valley, and of Whalley parish to the south; “it was probably founded,” Dr. Whitaker thinks, “by the mesne lords of the manor, and certainly at an early period he conjectures also that from the style of the existing fabric it was rebuilt about the time of Edward III.: the church consists of chancel, with south chapel, nave, low square tower and 6 bells, dated respectively 1567, 1567, 1726, 1624, 1834 and 1873; “the nave,” Whitaker says, “is separated from the choir by a screen, on which, in Old English characters, is the inscription following:-“Devotor’ et Joh’ is factum erat hoc opus, tempore domini Will. Stainford, Abb’is, anno domini Mill’mo C.CCo. Nonageno III. ad honorem B.Y.;” without are several ancient memorials, particularly the head of a large Gothic cross, dug up about 1801, and an imperfect statue of an ecclesiastic, vested and tonsured: the Talbots of Bashall, although for centuries buried here, have no memorials; but there are many monuments of the Sherburnes in the chapel bearing their name, and situated on the north side of the choir, from which it is separated by a screen apparently of Jacobean date: this chapel is an enlargement of the original chantry of St. Nicholas, and is almost filled with altar tombs bearing recumbent figures, and with various mural monuments; those of the Sherburne family here lying and commemorated by inscriptions are:-Sir Richard Sherburne knt. (1594) and Maude, his wife (1588); Richard Sherburne, of Stanihurst (1667); Richard Sherburne, of Stanihurst (1689), his daughters Elizabeth (1688) and Isabel (1663); Richard Sherburne, of Stanihurst (1690), and Anne, his wife (1693); Sir Nicholas Sherburne (1717) and his wife Isabel (1727); Richard Francis Sherburne esq. (1702): there is also a monument to Katharine, wife of William Pennington (1628), and one to the Hon. Peregrine, youngest son of William, Lord Widdrington (1749): there is an ancient font, the cover of which is dated 1593: the church was restored in 1845, and an organ erected in 1866. The registers date from the year 1640, but for the first two years from that date are in a dilapidated and illegible state. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £140, with residence and 70 acres of glebe, in the gift of Ralph John Aspinall esq. and held by the Rev. George Biglands Ackerley B.A. of St. Mary Hall, Oxford. The charities are of £9 yearly value. Ralph John Aspinall esq. who is lord of the manor, and the trustees of Miss Garnett are the principal landowners. The soil is clay; the subsoil is chiefly composed of limestone and gravel. The chief crop is wheat. The area of the township is 1,720 acres; rateable value, £2,188; and the population (1871) 171.

School (mixed), under government inspection, & supported by subscription & a government grant; Peter Livesey, master; Miss Millicent Prebble, mistress. A Sunday school is also held here.
