Historical Description

MONK BRETTON or BURTON, as it is usually called, is a township and large pleasant village, and ecclesiastical parish, formed in 1843 from the parish of Royston, situated on the summit of a lofty hill, 3 miles south from Royston, 2 east-north-east from Barnsley and 2 west-southwest from Cudworth station on the Midland railway; it is in the Southern division of the Riding, lower division of Staincross wapentake, Barnsley union, county court district and petty sessional division, rural deanery of Pontefract and archdeaconry and diocese of York. The Barnsley canal passes through. The township is governed by a Local Board of Health of 9 members. The church of St. Paul, rebuilt in 1877 in the Gothic style, from the designs of Messrs. Solaini, of Liverpool, consists of chancel, nave, aisles, a handsome tower with spire, containing 6 bells, given by Misa Bright in memory of her two sisters, at a cost of £700; the cost of the building was over £4,000, raised chiefly by voluntary contributions. The Old Town school, built in 1810, is now converted into a Town Hall. The register dates from the year 1839. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £300, with a good residence, in the gift of the vicar of Roystoh, and held by Rev. Alfred Lambert M.A. of Pembroke College, Cambridge. There are chapels belonging to the Wesleyan and New Connexion Methodists. The late Richard Day esq. left £400, the interest of which is appropriated for the education of children of the poor residing in this township. Here are almshouses for six poor widows, founded by Dame Mary Talbot, and endowed with £15 yearly. Broadhead’s charity, of £18 yearly, is distributed in doles to the poor. There are three stone quarries; the principal employment is in the collieries of the district. Sir Theodore Henry Brinckman bart. and Viscouni; Halifax-Wombwell, and Richard Day esq. are chief landowners. The trades carried on here are paper making, corn milling and colliery working. The soil is part clay and part loam; subsoil, sandstone. The chief crops are wheat, clover and a little barley and turnips. In 1861 the population of the township was 1,918, and in 1871, 2,090, and the area 2,1221 acres; rateable value, £16,230; the area of the ecclesiastical parish is 3,964 acres; population in 1871, 2,747.
