Burton Grange History

Burton Grange is a hamlet, three quarters of a mile south-east, on the river Dearne. Here are the ruins of an ancient priory, formerly belonging to Cluniac monks, part of which is now occupied as a farmhouse and bam. Cliff Bridge, half a mile south; Old Mill, a mile west; and Smithies, a mile north-west, are also hamlets; at Smithies a Gothic schoolroom was erected 1860 by subscription; it was licensed by the Archbishop of York, and divine service is celebrated in it every Sunday afternoon.
