Hessay History

Hessay is a township and small village in this parish, 2 miles distant from the church, and has a station on the York and Knaresborough railway. The parish school-room is used for divine worship every Sunday. The Wesleyans have a chapel here. Messrs. R. W. Shilbeck and B. Barstow are lords of the manor. The principal landowners are Messrs R. W. Shilbeck, B. Barstow, W. Fawcett, Thomas Rockliffe, A. Montagu, and the rector. The area is 1,255 acres; rateable value, £1,958; and the population in 1871 was 116.
