Historical Description

MORLEY-WITH-CHURWELL are townships constituting an ecclesiastical parish formed in 1832 from the old parish of Batley, and include a populous clothing district with a station on the Leeds and Dewsbury and Leeds, Bradford and Wakefield railways, 5 miles south-south-west from Leeds, 3 north from Batley, 5 north-east from Dewsbury and 191 ½ from London; this is a polling place for the Southern division of the Riding, in the lower division of the wapentake of Agbrigg, honor of Pontefract, Dewsbury union, county court district, petty sessional division, rural deanery of Birstal, archdeaconry of Craven and diocese of Ripon. The government is under a Local Board of Health. established 1862 and consisting of 12 members, which has much improved the sanitary condition of the district; the town is supplied with water from the Leeds Waterworks. The Leeds and Dewsbury railway passes through the Morley tunnel, 2 miles in length. The church of St. Peter, at Four Lane Ends, erected in 1829 and 1830, is a stone building in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, and tower with spire containing 1 bell. The register dates from the erection of the church. The living is a vicarage of the yearly value of £302, in the gift of the vicar of Batley and held by the Rev. Henry Jackson M.A. of Pembroke College, Oxford. St. Paul’s, Town End, is an ecclesiastical parish formed in 1878 from the parishes of Morley and Batley: the church, erected in 1876 at a cost of £3,500 on a site given by the Earl of Dartmouth. is a stone structure in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle and bell turret containing 1 bell. The register dates from the year 1878. The living is a vicarage with an endowment of £200 a year, in the gift of the vicars of Morley and Batley alternately, and held by the Rev. James Crook, of the University of Durham. There are chapels for Wesleyans, Congregationalists, Primitive Methodists, Baptists and the Catholic Apostolic church. Isaac Crowther’s charity, founded in 1845, consists of the interest of £1,000, to be distributed to Wesleyans. There is a good library in connection with the Young Men’s Christian Association. Howley Hall is in ruins, the park, however, is under cultivation. The Earl of Dartmouth is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is various; subsoil various. The land is chiefly in meadow. The area is 2,765 acres; rateable value, £49,139; the population in 1861, 6,840 and in 1871, 9,607.
