Historical Description

MORTON is a township and ecclesiastical parish, consisting of the hamlets of East and West Morton and the village of Micklethwaite, formed in 1845 from Bingley parish, in the Eastern division of the Riding, upper division of Skyrack wapentake, Keighley union and county court district, south Graven rural deanery, Craven archdeaconry and Ripon diocese, 3 miles north-west from Bingley. The church of St. Luke, consecrated in 1851, is an extremely plain edifice of native stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave and south aisle, with an organ chamber on the north side containing a fine-toned organ, and at the west end a bell cot containing 2 bells: in the Bouth aisle are two stained windows, that at the eastern end of the aisle having been erected in 1866 by Alfred Harris, jun. of Ashfield, Bingley, to the memory of Harriet his wife; there are sittings for 411, all free. The register dates from the year 1851. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £150, in the gift of the Crown and the Bishop of Ripon alternately, and held by the Rev. Francis Marriner B.A. of Durham University: the vicarage house is contiguous to the church. Here are Congregational, Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist; chapels. Upwood is the residence of Johnson Atkinson Busfeild esq. J.P. F. B. Greenwood esq. is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are the Rev. W. Busfeild, of south Cave; Henry Bence, esq; of Saxmundham, Suffolk; and Messrs J. W. and Holmes Wright. The soil is principally marly; subsoil, blue clay. The crops are barley, wheat and oats, but there is a large area of pasturage; turnips are much grown. The area is 3,773 acres; rateable value, £6,923. The population of the township in 1861 was 2,113; and in 1871, 2,164.
