MYTON-UPON-SWALE is a township, parish and pleasant village, 3 miles south from Brafferton station of the Boroughbridge and Knaresborongh branch, and 5 miles west from Alne station on the main line of the North Eastern railway, 3 miles east from Boronghbridge and 7 south-west from Easingwold, in the Thirsk and Malton division of the Riding, Bulmer wapentake, petty sessional division of Bulmer West, Easingwold union and county court district, rural deanery of Easingwold, archdeaconry of Cleveland and diocese of York: it is situated at the confluence of the rivers Swale and Ure, on the West Riding border of the county. An iron, bridge of handsome design was erected across the Swale by the late Major H. M. Stapylton in 1870, and is open to the public on payment of a toll. The church at St. Mary, restored in 1886—8 and reopened 4th April, 1888, is an edifice of stone in the Early English and Decorated styles, consisting of chancel, nave and an embattled western tover with pinnacles containing 3 bells: the reredos of carved oak was presented in 1904 by Miles John Stapylton esq.: the stained east window is a memorial to Miss Matthews, and there are others to the Rev. Ralph Oldham B.A. vicar, 1862—83, erected by his sister, and to the late Major Stapylton: in 1908 a porch was built by Mrs. V. M. Schomberg, of Seend House, Wilts, to her parents, Martin Bryan Stapylton and Mary Jane, his wife: the church was restored in 887 at a cost of £1,200, and refitted and reseated in oak at the expense of the late Major Stapylton, and affords 120 sittings.
