Historical Description

NAFFERTON is a large parish and village, including the hamlet of Pockthorpe, on the road between Driffield and Bridlington, with a station on the Hull and Scarborough section of the North Eastern railway, 2 ½ miles north-east from Driffield and 10 south-west from Bridlington, in the Buckrose division of the Riding, wapentake of Dickering, Bainton Beacon petty sessional division, union and county court district of Driffield, rural deanery of Harthill, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The church of All Saints is an ancient building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, clerestoried nave, aisles and an embattled western tower containing 3 excellent bells and a clock with three dials, placed in 1883 the stained east window was erected by John Dickson esq. in 1854, in memory of his uncle, Richard Dickson esq. and there are other memorial windows to Francis and Jane Dickson, to the Rev. James Megarry B.A. curate here 1885-1900, to the above John Dickson esq. and the Rev. James Davidson M.A. vicar here 1854-1907: the Transition Norman font was restored in 1846: in 1865 two stained windows were erected in the south aisle by the children of the late Jacob Laybourne esq. of Nafferton, in memory of their father and grandfather; and to the late Mrs. E. H. Davidson: the reredos was presented by John Dickson esq.: there is a hagioscope in the south wall of the chancel: in the churchyard are two ancient recumbent figures of stone, brought here from Lowthorpe churchyard: the interior was repewed in 1828 and the roof reconstructed and raised in 1846: in 1870 the church was restored at a cost of about £700, when a new organ was introduced, and in 1883 the chancel roof was renovated and the tower new roofed at a cost of £700, by the late G. Walker esq. of Nether Hall: there are 500 sittings. The registers date from the year 1653. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £330, including 38 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of York, and held since 1907 by the Rev. Walter Marshall Hewitt M.A. of Christ’s College, Cambridge. In June, 1896, a piece of ground nearly 1 ½ acres in extent, was consecrated by the Bishop of Hull as an addition to the old churchyard, which it adjoins; the cost of the ground, amounting to more than £400, was defrayed by public subscription. The Wesleyan chapel was erected in 1907 by Mr. Hatfield, of Manchester, at a cost, including a Sunday school, of £2,000; the Primitive Methodist chapel, erected in 1858, affords 280 sittings. The Ancient Shepherds’ Hall, built in 1861, holds about 400 persons: this society has about 400 members here, all being working men. Nafferton Conservative Club, formed in 1885, has about 80 members. The charities comprise three trusts in houses and lands, viz.: the poor’s trust of £34; the parish trust of £32 yearly, and John Baron’s charity of £5 a year, originally for the free education of poor children; in addition to these a sum of £200 was left by the late George Hodgson, a solicitor, of Driffield, the interest to be distributed by the vicar and churchwardens on Christmas Eve to the six oldest inhabitants who have not at any time received parish relief. In 1904 Mrs. Davidson left by her will the sum of £400, the interest thereof to be equally divided for the maintenance of the national school, infants’ school and Church Sunday school, and for the preservation of her memorial stone. The Rev. James Davidson, vicar 1854-1906, also made some bequests to the church and the poor. Near the station are extensive corn and flour mills belonging to Messrs. Thirsk and Sons. William Herbert St. Quintin esq. of Scampston Hall, is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are A. J. Wise esq. and Col. H. B. Harrison-Broadley M.P. of Welton House. The soil is clay and chalk; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips. The area of the township is 4,827 acres of land and 5 of water; rateable value, £8,580; the population of the civil parish in 1911 was 1,207, and the ecclesiastical parish, 1,153.
