Historical Description

NETHER HOYLAND is a village, township and ecclesiastical parish formed from the parish of Wath-upon-Dearne, 1 mile from Birdwell station on the south Yorkshire railway, 10 miles north-north-west from Sheffield and 5 southeast from Barnsley; it is a polling place for the southern division of the Riding, in the north division of the wapentake of Strafforth and Tickhill, Barnsley union, county court district and petty sessional division, Wath rural deanery, York archdeaconry and diocese, near to the Shelfield and Wakefield turnpike road. The church of St. Peter was built in 1830, on the site of a chapel built by the Townend family, licensed in 1734 and consecrated in 1740; and is a stone building in the Pointed style, with a square tower surmounted by a lofty spire containing 3 bells. There are in the churchyard two monuments of the Townsends the founders of the original church; the bells bear the date 1735. The register dates from the year 1741. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £460, with residence, in the gift of Earl Fitzwilliam, and held by the Rev. Henry Townsend sale M.A. of Emmanuel College, Cambridge. There are Wesleyan, Primitive Methodist, Reformed Methodist and Congregational chapels. The charities are £5 yearly value. The Town hall was erected in 1840. There are several collieries, ironstone pits, and the extensive works of George Dawes called the Milton and Elsecar Iron Works, also brick and tile works. Earl Fitzwilliam is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is clay; the subsoil contains veins of coal and iron. The chief crops are wheat, beans, barley and turnips. The area is 2,085 acres; rateable value, £30,456 16s.; and the population in 1861 was 5,352; 1871, 6,298; the population of the ecclesiastical parish in 1871 was 4,327.
