Historical Description

NEWTON-UPON-OUSE is a township and parish on the navigable river Ouse, which here forms the boundary between the North and West Ridings, about 3 miles north-west from Beningbrough station on the main line of the North Eastern railway, 9 north-west from York and 7 south-south-west from Easingwold, in the Thirsk and Malton division of the Riding, Bulmer wapentake, petty sessional division of Bulmer West, Easingwold union and county court district, rural deanery of Easingwold, archdeaconry of Cleveland and diocese of York. The church of All Saints was rebuilt, with the exception of the lower portion of the tower, which is Norman, in 1849, at the expense of the Hon. Lydia Frances Catherine Dawnay, and is an edifice of stone, in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, clerestoried nave, aisles, south porch and a western tower with pinnacles and an elegant spire, rising to the height of 150 feet, and containing a clock and 3 bells: the church has an open-timbered roof of oak: the pulpit, choir stalls and screen are of foreign oak: the stained east window, by Willement, was erected in 1849 by Lydia F. C. Dawnay, in memory of her parents: the chancel retains two sedilia, and adjoining is a recess, possibly intended for a piscina: on the north side is a credence table: nearly in the centre of the chancel is a fine brass with full-length effigies of William Henry (Dawnay) 6th Viscount Downe M.A. rector of Ashwell, Rutland, and of Sessay and Thormanby, Yorks, d. 23 May, 1846, and to Lydia (Heathcote), his wife, d, 18 March, 1848; the figure of the viscount is in clerical robes, his feet resting on two lions couchant gardant; the feet of the lady rest on a cushion, with a dog reposing thereon; the effigies are surmounted with shields of arms; around on a fillet is an inscription: one of the chancel windows is a memorial to Margaret Earle, d. 8 October, 1827, and another was given by Viscountess Downe when the church was rebuilt, and in the south aisle is a memorial window to the Hon. Payn Dawnay, presented by his nephews Geoffrey and Francis Dawnay: at the entrance to the chancel are inscribed brasses to members of the Bourchier family: the rood screen is to the memory of the late Col. the Hon. L. P. Dawnay, and was erected by his wife, the Lady Victoria Dawnay, and children: the reredos, of carved oak, was designed by Mr. Temple Moore, architect, of London, and executed by Mr. Thomas sparling, of Shipton, York, with the exception of some figures carved in Holland: and there is a carved octagonal font: the church affords 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1570. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £412, including 250 acres of glebe lying at Sutton-on-the-Forest, and residence, in the gift of Capt. Guy P. Dawnay M.V.O., D.S.O. and held since 1909 by the Rev. David Nickerson M.A. of Kings College, Windsor, Nova Scotia. In the village is a Wesleyan chapel. There are charities of £15 12s. 4d. yearly value. Captain Guy P. Dawnay M.V.O., D.S.O. is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is various, rich and productive; the subsoil is chiefly clay and sand. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats, beans, turnips and seeds. The area of the township is 1,729 acres of land and 4 of water; rateable value, £5,814; the population in 1911 was 374 in the township and 664 in the parish.

The school committee consists of 6 managers, 4 foundation managers, appointed by the parish, & 1 by the county authority.
