Beningbrough History
BENINGBROUGH, once a Roman Settlement, is a township in Newton-upon-Ouse parish, on the bank of the river Ouse, 1 ½ miles south-by-east from Newton and 2 miles south from Beningbrough station, in the union of Easingwold and county court district of York.
Beningbrough Hall is a picturesque building of red brick, with stone facings: the south front overlooks the navigable river Ouse and the river Nidd, and the north front the Hambleton Hills; the park covers an area of 200 acres: it is the property of Captain Guy P. Dawnay M.V.O., D.S.O. and the residence of Marriott Parkinson esq. Captain Gay P. Dawnay M.V.O., D.S.O. is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The area is 1,076 acres of land and 17 of water; rateable value, £128; the population in 1911 was 55.
