Historical Description

NORMANTON is a parish containing the townships of Normanton, Altofts and Snydale; it is 195 ¼ miles from London, 53 from Bolton, 47 from Bury, 24 ½ from Bradford, 48 from, Hull, 10 ¾ from Leeds, 37 from, Skipton, 64 ¾ from Wigan, 24 ½ from York and 5 north-east from Wakefield, and is a polling place for the Southern division of the Riding, in the lower division of Agbrigg wapentake, Wakefield union and county court district, rural deanery of Pontefract, archdeaconry and diocese of York, bounded on the west by the river Calder; it has a very important railway station, the joint property of the Midland, the North Eastern and the Lancashire and Yorkshire Companies, the two latter having their termini here. The church of All saints, is a stone building in the Norman and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel with a chapel on the south side, nave, aisles, and a tower containing 3 bells dating from 1629: the clerestory and roof of the church and two walls of the chancel have been rebuilt: the chapel has been the burial place of the families of Bunny of Newland, Torre of Snydale, Favell, Smith. Mallett and Levett, and contains monuments to Richard Mallet de Normanton (1687); Katherine Favell, wife of Henry Favell, of Pontefract (1722 ); other members of the same family (1770); Esther (Milnes), wife of James Torre, of Snydale (1782); Sarah Smith. of Cawood (1725); John Smith. of Newland (1746); and Anne, his wife (1750); Sir Edward Dodsworth bart. (1845); Sir John Sylvester Smith bart. (1730); William Cockell, of Alltofts (1768); and Sarah his wife (1776); and a brass to James Torre, of Snidale ( 1699); at the north-east end of the nave stands an altar-tomb of John Freston ob. (1594): the font is dated 1662: there are four Stained windows. The register dates from the year 1537, but is not in good condition; a copy, however, has been made. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £400 with residence, including 71 acres of glebe land, in the gift of Trinity College, Cambridge, and held by the Rev. William Meredith Lane M.A. of that college. The Methodist Free Church and Primitive Methodists have chapels. The charities are of about £4 yearly value. This parish has become very populous in consequence of the collieries by which it is surrounded producing abundance of coal, suitable for domestic as well as for manufacturing purposes. The moat which surrounded Normanton when the Roman encampment was formed is still traceable. Part of the cross still remains, and there is an artificial hill, called Haw hill, situated on the east side of the village, supposed to be a barrow. The Duke of Leeds is lord of the manor; the Hon. Mrs. Meynell Ingram, James Mills Favell esq. Trinity College, Cambridge, and The Right Hon. Thomas Milner-Gihson are chief landowners. The Foil is strong, the subsoil is gravel, bind and coal. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley, beans and potatoes; clover is also produced. The area of the parish is 4,124 acres, and of the township 1,227 acres; the population of the parish in 1861 was 2,001, and of the township 563; (1871), parish 6,585; township 3,448; rateable value of township £30,528 3s. 6d.

Woodhouse forms a portion of the village.

Normanton Common is half a mile east of the village.
