Newland-with-Woodhouse-Moor History
Newland-with-Woodhouse-Moor, situated on the Calder, and formerly extra-parochial, is now a parish, in Wakefield union, but belonging to the parish of Normanton for ecclesiastical purposes. Newland Hall, the seat of William Locke esq. 1 mile west of the village, and once the property of the Knights Hospitallers of St. John of Jerusalem, who had a preceptory here, is an ancient stone building standing on an elevation overlooking the Calder, and commanding some extensive views of the neighbourhood. William Locke esq. is landowner and lord of the manor. Here are the extensive collieries of Messrs. Locke and Co. The area is 311 acres; rateable value, £4,352; the population in 1871 was 46.
