Historical Description

NORTH CAVE is a parish, township and extensive village, on the road from Howden to Beverley, with a station on the Hull and Barnsley railway, and is 5 ½ miles north from Brough station and 5 north-east from Staddlethorpe station on the Hull and Selby branch of the North Eastern railway and 6 south from Market Weighton, in the Howdenshire division of the Riding, Hunsley Beacon division of Harthill wapentake, petty sessional division of South Hunsley Beacon, Howden union and county court district, rural deanery of Howden, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The church of All Saints is an ancient cruciform building of stone in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles, now overgrown with ivy, and consisting of chancel, clerestoried nave of three bays, aisles, south transept and an embattled western tower with pinnacles, containing a clock and 5 bells: in recesses on either side of the chancel are recumbent effigies of alabaster supposed to represent members of the Metham family, who formerly held this manor: a fine organ was presented to the parish in 1870: the stained east window is a memorial to J. C. Clitherow, d. 1865: there are 370 sittings, 348 being free. The register dates from the year 1670. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £215, with residence, in the gift of Lt.-Col. J. B. Stracey-Clitherow, and held since 1911 by the Rev. Mark Napier Rice M.A. of Selwyn College, Cambridge. There is a Wesleyan Methodist chapel, built in 1839, and seating 200 persons, a Primitive Methodist chapel, and a Parish hall, containing a reading room. A corn market is held every Thursday at the “White Hart.” A sum of £40 to £50 yearly, arising from money invested in railway shares, presented by deed of gift of the late G. Baron esq. is distributed to the poor in coals on the 23rd of January. Hotham Hall, a spacious mansion, standing in a park of 150 acres, to the north of the village and within the township, is the seat of Lieut.-Col. John Bourchier Stracey-Clitherow J.P. Lieut.-Col. Stracey-Clitherow, who is lord of the manor, the governors of Giggleswick Grammar School, John Horsfall esq. of Oulton, Leeds, and the trustees of the late T. S. Whitaker esq. are the chief landowners. The soils are limy, sand, clay and loam; the subsoils, chalk, oolite, blue lias and gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley, rye, turnips and beans. The district is also noted for the breeding of hackney horses. The area of North Cave with Everthorpe and Drewton township is 5,137 acres of land and 6 of water; rateable value, £9,778; the population in 1911 was 1,033, and in the parish, 1,220.
