Historical Description

NORTH DALTON is a parish, township and village, 2 miles north from Middleton-on-the-Wolds station on the Driffield and Market Weighton section of the North Eastern railway, and 6 west from Cranswick station on the Hull and Scarborough branch of the North Eastern railway, 7 south-west from Driffield and 10 north of Beverley, in the Buckrose division of the Riding, Bainton Beacon petty passional division, wapentake of Harthill (Bainton Beacon division), union and county court district of Driffield, rural deanery of Harthill, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The church of All Saints, situated on an eminence, is an ancient building of stone in the Norman style, consisting of chancel and nave, and an embattled western tower containing one bell: the church, which retains an ancient Norman font, has many mural monuments, and in 1892 a stained east window, designed by Sir E. Burne-Jones bart. was erected in part as a memorial to the Rev. Thomas Collins M.A. vicar 1879-91; it was restored and a vestry added in 1872 at a cost of £1,100; during the restoration a splendid Norman arch and doorway and a low-side window were discovered: there are 200 sittings. The date of the register is from the year 1653. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £129, including 6 acres of glebe, in the gift of Sir Robert James Milo Walker bart. of Sand Hutton, and held since 1908 by the Rev. Samuel Edwin Paling, of St. Bees. There is a Wesleyan chapel, built in 1839, and a Primitive Methodist chapel, built in 1867. The principal landowners are the Earl of Londesborongh K.C.V.O. who is lord of the manor, and Sir Robert James Milo Walker bart. of Sand Hutton. The soil is chalk; subsoil, on the north side is sand mixed with flint, on the south side, chalk. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley and turnips The area is 4,638 acres of land and 1 of water; rateable value, £4,288; the population in 1911 was 459.

Public Elementary School (mixed & infants), erected in 1865 & enlarged in 1886; the school was also thoroughly restored & renovated & a new gallery added to the infants’ room in 1892, at a cost of £90, & in 1906 was again enlarged, for 120 children, at a cost of over £700; average attendance, 88.
